  1. Leadership Studies A journey abroad Joey Morer

  2. MY PORTFOLIO • I was thinking about what my portfolio could be about. • I was not involved in many clubs, so I thought about my favorite experiences while I was at school, and that was my semester abroad in London. • I decided to have my presentation follow the steps that you take when you travel abroad!

  3. “Because he had no place he could stay in without getting tired of it and because there was no where to go but everywhere, keep rolling under the stars..”-Jack Kerouac, On The Road

  4. Overview • THE DROPOFF ( London) • BOARDING (Ireland) • TAKEOFF (Paris) • LANDING (Budapest) • DEPARTURE (Morocco) • ARRIVAL( Home)

  5. THE DROPOFF London

  6. New Experiences • At first being in a new city in a different part of the world was very overwhelming. • But I was meeting so many , and visiting so many amazing places that the transition was very smooth.

  7. Getting into the minor • Like most things in my life I went about the minor, in a different way than most people. • First class I took was a 400 level course! • Like with London the class involved lots of new experiences. • I am glad I took the class, because it helped me realize that I wanted to continue on with the minor!

  8. Leadership Theory • Relational Leadership model. “ putting relationships with people first” Komives. • I related this theory to my time in London, and my experience joining the minor!

  9. Komives • Knowing: World Views • Being: Differences in people are valuable. • Doing: Framing and reframing • These are the 3 Parts of Komives model that make up my time in London!

  10. BOARDING Ireland

  11. Building Relationships This trip was about building relationships for me, because I went with two of my new friends. This was only a day trip so we fit everything that you can do in Dublin into one day, which was very tiring, but it was very fun. Although this was a busy trip, it helped us build a great friendship.

  12. Travel Quote • “I wandered everywhere, through cities and countries wide. And everywhere I went, the world was on my side.” ― Roman Payne, Rooftop Soliloquy

  13. TAKEOFF PARIS

  14. Group Trip • This was a great trip because this trip was a program trip. • Really got to know the people that were not in my classes or living in my building a lot better. • This trip I felt more comfortable, because this was around the time that I started to feel more secure about being abroad!

  15. Leadership Theory • Outcome # 106: Student will show knowledge of Intercultural communication considerations • This outcome really came into place, because as a group when we would go out by ourselves in Paris, we would have to figure out how to communicate, without being disrespectful to the local Parisians.

  16. Leadership Quote • He who has never learned to obey cannot be a good commander. —Aristotle • I found this quote by Aristotle to be very comparable to my time in Paris.

  17. LANDING Budapest

  18. Settling In • This trip was one of my favorites because it was not only very interesting, but it was also when I was the most confident about traveling. • I went with two of my good friends • My uncle lives in Budapest so we got to meet up with him, and celebrated my birthday with them which was very special. • It also reminded me of how I felt about the leadership minor.

  19. Travel Quote • “If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion, and avoid the people, you might better stay home.” ― James A. Michener • This quote perfectly described my trip to Budapest, The food, customs, and the people really made the trip!

  20. Leadership • This trip also reminded me, of the time I felt really confident, and excited about the leadership minor. • I knew what I was doing, and I was excited for what was going to come next. Ex: being in SOLC. • Student Organized Leadership Consultants.

  21. DEPARTURE Morocco

  22. The final Trip • This was by far my favorite trip, not only because it was with my best friends, it was because it was a real travelers trip • I met a lot of people not just from Morocco, but from all over the world, and I had experiences for a lifetime. • I also learned a lot different cultures.

  23. Leadership Theory • Outcome #68 • Students will demonstrate personal application of the “Model of Intercultural Sensitivity” by Bennett • This theory by Bennett, really exemplifies my trip to Morocco, I met a lot of different people and learned a lot about intercultural sensitivity.

  24. ARRIVAL HOME

  25. What’s Next? • Maybe more traveling • Interning abroad? • Move back to NYC and find a job? • Either way I know that what I have learned in this Leadership minor will help me in whatever I do next!
