Equipment • Tank Truck • Sampling Equipment • Sample collectors (dippers, dipper holders or straws) • Sample containers (capped vials or bags) • Insulated cooler, rack or floater, ice, water • Sanitizing solution • Sanitizer test kit • Thermometer • Permanent marker • Watch or timing device • Flashlight • Producer receipt & pen

  3. Milk Tanker 1. Construction complies with PMO regulations. 2. Cleaned after each day’s use. 3. Sanitization-records/wash tags maintained. 4. Vehicle properly identified.

  4. Bulk Tank Sampling Equipment • Dipper for sampling of milk • Dipper holder with sanitizing solution • Sample containers (plastic hinged vials or plastic bags) • Insulated Cooler • Sanitizing solution 200 ppm chlorine or equivalent • Sanitizer field test kit • Thermometer (checked within 6 months) • Permanent Marker – indelible and waterproof • Watch or timing device • Flashlight • Farm pickup slips and pen

  5. Sample Transfer Instrument: (Dipper) • Clean, Sanitized or sterilized and of proper construction and repair.

  6. Sampling Instrument Container: (dipper holder) Proper design, construction and repair for storing sample dipper in sanitizer

  7. Sample Containers: • Clean, properly sanitized or sterilized. • Adequate supply, properly stored and handled.

  8. Sample Storage Case: Cooler or Ice Chest Rigid construction, suitable design to maintain samples at 32-40 F, protected from contamination. Ample space for ice and water racks provided where necessary.

  9. Sanitizer field test kit Test kit for checking strength of sanitizer. ( 200 parts per million chlorine or equivalent)

  10. Thermometer: Thermometer-approved type. • Accuracy checked against standard thermometer every 6 months—accuracy + or - 1 division. • Date checked and checkers initial attached to case

  11. Bulk Milk Pickup Procedures

  12. Remove hose and electrical cord from truck. Feed hose through port hole and connect electrical cord

  13. Take sample vial, dipper in dipper holder and producer receipt into milk house. Turn on lights if necessary. Turn off agitator and refrigeration.

  14. Remove cap and sanitize outlet valve. Connect transfer hose.

  15. Hand Washing/Drying Hands need to be washed and thoroughly dried with paper towel prior to sample collection. Note: Hands may need to be washed and dried more than once during the pickup procedure, if at any time the potential of contamination of the bulk tank may occur. (example: during milk measurement.)

  16. Smell milk through tank port hole. Do not pickup milk with bad odor.

  17. Milk in any container outside the bulk tank is not acceptable and must be rejected.

  18. Make sure that milk is calm and still before measuring.

  19. Milk Measurement: • Dry measuring stick with single-service paper towel. • If stick is stored outside tank wash stick and dry before measuring. • Measure milk only when quiescent (calm and still). • Read stick to the nearest graduation or to the even graduation if between graduation. • Take at least 2 identical readings. • Record stick reading on producer receipt immediately. • Do Not contaminate milk during measuring process.

  20. Agitation of Bulk Tank Agitate milk before sampling at least 5 minutes or longer as may be required by tank specifications. Do Not open bulk tank valve until milk is measured and sampled.

  21. While tank is agitating, record temperature of milk from thermometer on the bulk tank. Milk must be 40° or below or it may not be picked up.

  22. The accuracy of all tank thermometers must be checked monthly against a calibrated test thermometer and recorded.

  23. Sanitize test thermometer prior to taking temperature of milk for comparison with tank thermometer. (one (1) minute contact time)

  24. Record on each producer receipt in triplicate • Date & time of pickup • Name or number of producer • Pounds or gallons of milk • Hauler identification • Weigher/Sampler signature & license number • Temperature of milk One copy of receipt stays at farm, one copy is maintained by the hauler and the original goes to the purchasing dealer

  25. Temperature Control Temperature control sample is a duplicate sample taken at the first stop and used for temperature monitoring of each rack of samples. Temperature control sample must be properly labeled with time, date, temperature, and with producer and Weigher/Sampler identification.

  26. Sample Containers Sample containers should legibly identify producer and date of pickup.

  27. Sample dipper rinsed at least two times in the milk before transferring sample.

  28. Remove dipper from sanitizing container. The dip should extend 6-8 inches into the milk to obtain a representative sample

  29. Fill sample container off to the side of the tank.

  30. Fill sample container no more than ¾ full.

  31. Sampler dipper: Rinse sample dipper in tap water. Replace dipper in dipper container. Open milk outlet valve

  32. Milk Sample Container • Immediately take milk sample to the sample case. • Turn on milk pump.

  33. Sample Storage Case Refrigerant (ice-water) maintained no higher than milk level in sample containers. Maintain sample temperature (32-40F) . Do not bury tops of container in ice. Protect against contamination.

  34. Finishing the Pickup • Shut off pump. • Disconnect transfer hose and cap hose. • Unplug electrical cord. • Check bottom of tank for sediment, frozen milk and report abnormalities to producer and field man. • Rinse all surfaces with warm water. • Replace tank covers, rinse floor, turn off light. • Return hose and cord to truck and latch compartment and insure that hose port is closed.

  35. Sample Transportation/Analysis Deliver samples and sample data to laboratory promptly. Maintain samples during transportation at 32-40 F. Samples need to be analyzed within 48 hrs of sample collection.

  36. Pickup practices conducted to prevent contamination of milk. Hands clean and dry; no infections. Clean outer clothing; no use of tobacco. Hose port used; tank lids closed during completion of pickup. Hose properly capped between milk pickup operations; hose cap protected during milk pickup. Hose disconnected before tank rinsed. Observation made for sediment/abnormalities. Sample collected at every pickup. Multiple tanks at a single producer should be treated as separate pickups taking separate samples and stick readings.
