  2. The order of operations can be very confusing when you first begin. Knowing which steps to follow first, will go a long way in your getting the right answer. When there is more than one operational sign in a mathematical expression, you will only get the correct answer if you follow a specific set of rules.In this tutorial, you will learn how to solve mathematical expressions using the correct order of operations. You will also practice solving expressions and take an assessment at the end to gauge your level of understanding. Upon the completion of this tutorial, you should be able to solve any mathematical expression following the correct order of operations. Let’s Get Started! Introduction Throughout this tutorial you will see this navigation bar. It will help you find your way around.

  3. If you follow the order of operation rules, you will be able to solve mathematical expressions successfully. When you have a math problem with more than one operational sign, you must solve it following the correct order.Let’s look at an example. Two students are given the same problem. Here is their work. Click the picture below to watch a short video on order of operations Student #1 Student #2 3 + 24 ÷ 6 = 24 ÷ 6 = 4 3 + 4 = 7 3 + 24 ÷ 6 = 3 + 24 = 27 27 ÷ 6 = 4.5 As you can see, these students came up with a different answer. Because of the potential to get different answers depending on the order in which you solve a problem, Mathematicians all around the world have agreed on a specific order of solving expressions so that every student gets the same answer. Over the years, teachers have come up with many ways to help students remember the order of operations. For the purposes of this tutorial, we will use the acronym, Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally to help us remember which operations that complete first. Video Tutorial

The rules for Order of Operations are as follows:1) First, complete all calculations in Parentheses (this includes brackets and braces)2) Next, solve the Exponents and roots3) Next, solve all Multiplication and Division, working from left to right4) Finally, solve all Addition and Subtraction, working from left to rightPlease notice that the first letter of each operation above is underlined. This is where our acronym Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally comes in. Each word in the acronym begins with the same letter of the operations, in the correct order. Please memorize this acronym! If you can remember this acronym, you will remember the correct steps when you complete mathematical expressions. So, let’s review. When solving mathematical expressions, follow the correct order of operations. Before beginning, copy the problem on your own paper exactly as it appears on the screen. Then, follow the rules of operation: Parentheses Exponents and roots Multiplication and Division Addition and Subtraction Don’t Forget to do operations that are on the same level from left to right!

Please review these examples 6 + 10 x 7 = 10 x 7 = 70 6 + 70 = 67 First, rewrite the problem on your own paper Solve multiplication next Rewrite new problem Solution 10 + (8 * 8) ÷ 8 = (8 * 8) = 64 10 + 64 ÷ 8 = 64 ÷ 8 = 8 10 + 8 = 18 First, rewrite the problem on your own paper Solve parentheses Rewrite new problem Solve division next Rewrite new problem Solution 33 x 5 – 15 ÷ 3 = 33 = 27 27 x 5 – 15 ÷ 3 = 27 x 5 = 135 135 – 15 ÷ 3 = 15 ÷ 3 = 5 135 – 15 = 120 First, rewrite the problem on your own paper Solve exponent Rewrite new problem Solve multiplication next (remember left to right for operations on same level) Rewrite new problem Solve division Rewrite new problem Solution
