The College Board AP Program www.apcentral.collegeboard.com Advanced Placement is the most widely accepted college-level academic program available to high school students. 18,340 High Schools offered an AP class 1,973,545 Students took at least one AP course 3,456,020 AP exams were taken 4,001 Colleges recognize AP for placement/credit 31 different AP courses offered by the College Board (the governing body of AP) representing Math, Science, SS, Engl., Languages, Fine Arts

What is an AP course? • Standardized courses given to high school students that are equivalent to undergraduate courses in college. • Curriculum is set by the College Board • Courses are taught by high school faculty • Students can receive college credit or placement • Students take the AP exam to prove mastery of the course

What is the AP Exam? • The AP Exam is the culminating test for an AP course – Written by the College Board • Every student takes the same AP exam for a respective AP course • All AP exams (except studio art) consist of a Mult. Choice and a free response section • The AP exam dates are set a year in advance and take place in MAY. • Graded on a scale of 1 to 5 with a 3 serving as the passing mark • Students will receive their scores in July

  6. AP Equity Policy Statement: “All students who are willing to accept the challenge of a rigorous academic curriculum should be considered for admission to AP courses. The Board encourages the elimination of barriers that restrict access to AP courses for students from ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the AP Program. Schools should make every effort to ensure that their AP classes reflect the diversity of their student population.”

The D127 AP Program is Growing • 1993-1994 – 21 Exams given, 2 AP courses • 2000-2001 -- 228 Exams given, 6 AP courses • 2006-2007 – 550 Exams given, 14 AP courses • 2008-2009 – 1094 Exams given, 16 AP courses • 2009-2010 – 1250 Exams given, 18 AP courses • 2010-2011 – 1391 Exams given, 19 AP courses • 2011-2012 – Goal -1800 Exams, 19 AP courses • 2012-2013 – AP Human Geo, 20 AP courses

What are the benefits? • Growth as a student • Learn a subject in greater depth • Gain confidence by meeting the challenges of a more rigorous course • Gain experience in college-level work • Earn college credit and/or placement • Colleges look for challenging course work on a student’s transcript when making admission decisions

  15. What are the costs? • No course fees • The College Board charges $87 for each AP exam a student takes

  17. With ~ 25,000 public high schools in the U.S.… Ranking 598 on the list of all eligible public high schools includes Grayslake Central in the highest 98% of schools in the nation. Ranking 1355 includes Grayslake North in the highest 95%.

  18. How do I enroll in AP courses? • Get information on the courses you are interested in by talking with AP teachers • Meet with your counselor to devise a plan of courses to take • Parents and students should work together to devise an academic plan early in order to prepare for an AP curriculum
