  2. Christopher Columbus: Biographical Facts By: Dr. Artrip Christopher Columbus was a determined man who had an adventurous life. Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. He was a mapmaker and navigated ships. He had an obsession with traveling by sea and was convinced he could sail to China through the Atlantic Ocean. His first voyage nearly killed him. While navigating through the Atlantic Ocean, he and his crew were attacked by the French. His ship was burned and he swam to the coast of Portugal. He settled there and wed Felipa Perestrello. Columbus was determined to continue his journey though. Despite rejection from the King of Portugal and other monarchs, he finally convinced Queen Isabella of Spain to fund his aspired journey. In August of 1492, Columbus left Spain in the Santa Maria, with the Pinta and the Niña along side. Contrary to popular belief, Columbus never actually discovered North America, only the outlying islands. Nonetheless, this adventurous navigator made an impressionable mark on American history through his determination and travels.
