  2. Feeding the World • Famine – widespread starvation caused by shortage of food • Malnutrition – when people don’t get enough Calories or eat sufficient variety of foods • Major components – Carbohydrates, Lipids, and Proteins

  3. What is diet? • Type and amount of food he/she eats • Healthy diet has right balance of nutrients, minerals, and vitamins

  4. Green revolution • Started by Norman Bourlaug • Between 1950-1970 food production around world was increase substantially • New varieties of grains increased yields

  5. What is arable land? • Land that can be used to grow crops • Only 10% of Earth’s surface can be farmed

  6. What makes soil fertile? • Fungi and bacteria by decomposing dead plants and organic debris • Small animals break up soil by letting in air and water

  7. Key words to know: • Erosion • Desertification • Soil conservation • Compost • Salinization • Pesticides • Biological pest control
