ASHRAE Research • Mission: To improve the quality of life and to answer tomorrow’s questions through research today. • Development of technical information to create standards and guidelines, which serve as the basis for testing and design practices around the world. • Backbone to the Handbooks, Journal, Standards & Certification and other educational courses • But what does that mean?

  3. ASHRAE Research Examine how Standards relate to every day needs Explore new industry advances and how they relate to existing policies Examine real-life results in relation to established and new goals Investigate new avenues to further the industry, improve policy, & benefit every day life for all

  12. “We raise money for HVAC&R Research!”

  13. How do you sell it? • ASHRAE Research: • Helps the environment • Creates better living conditions • Prevents the spread of bacteria and diseases

  14. “I raise money to…” • Improve the HVAC systems of buildings, trains, & buses to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases for the general public. • Reduce commercial countertop appliance emissions that impact workers’ and patrons’ health and comfort

  15. “I raise money to save the…” • Improve environmental impacts from ground source heat pumps. • Regular updating of the climatic conditions to show due diligence in a world of changing climate.

  16. “I raise money to help…” • Non-profit sustainability projects • Reduce costs to heat and cool homes • Improve Refrigeration • Lowering costs • Less spoilage

  17. Research Projects That impact all aspects of all of our lives

  18. Research Project 1450 • How are contaminates from attached or integral garages impacting IAQ and quality of life in residential buildings? • How is it happening? • What works, what doesn’t, and how big is the problem? • Thanks to this project, we’ll soon know.

  19. Research Project 1603 • What role does the HVAC systems of buildings, trains, & buses play in the transmission of infectious diseases for the general public? • Do the current standards allow for enough fresh air, filtering, and humidly control to be safe or re new guidelines needed? • Thanks to this project, we’ll soon know.

  20. Research Project 1631 • How are commercial countertop appliance emissions impacting workers’ and patrons’ health and comfort? • Do the current standards control grease, steam, and odor well enough to be safe and comfortable or are new guidelines needed? • Thanks to this project, we’ll soon know.

  21. Research Project 1649 • What is impact on IAQ of using High Efficiency Replacement Filters in residential buildings? • What is the life of these filters vs traditional filters? Are the benefits worth the cost? • Do they actually even work to improve IAQ? • Thanks to this project, we’ll soon know.

  22. 80+ research projects • Traditional projects • Special focus projects • Development of User Guides • Grant-in-Aid Graduate Student projects • All 14 Regions have active projects • All members benefit … regardless of location regardless of specialty
