Agenda • Introduction • Background Literature • Methodology • Findings • Discussion • Ideas for Future Work • Conclusions
Introduction • Factors Influencing Computer Information System Majors Whether to Join AITP • Why did I choose this topic? • Majority of my fellow CIS majors have not joined our AITP chapter. • Some students are missing out the benefits of AITP.
Introduction (continued) • My research question is: • Find out what factors encourage or discourage students
Background Literature • Searched research databases for reasons why people join / do not join clubs. • Keywords: Peer influences, why people join fraternities/sorties, benefits of joining clubs… • Found little information from peer-reviewed journals. • Decided to conduct my OWN research.
Methodology • Conducted structured interviews. • 10 interviews • Interview make-ups • First AITP meeting this semester
Interview Findings • Influence of Others • CISprofessors • Classmates/friends • Job employers
Interview Findings (continued) • Limiting Factors (3 main factors) • Time • Money • Knowledge
Other Findings • Effectiveness of CIS professors • Only three of the thirteen • Professional Chapter problems
Effectiveness of CIS Professors Promoting AITP Membership 89% of the students who attended the first AITP meeting this semester were referred by 1 of 3 professors!
Discussion • Examination of my results • Satisfaction • 3 main limiting factors • Some of my expectations were correct • One example I found… • Some of my expectations were incorrect • Professors are not affectively encouraging CIS students to join.
MORE Questions / Ideas for Future Work • My NEW questions: • Future plans to further answer these questions: • Conduct surveys • Theory of Planned Behavior • Analyze results
Conclusions • Current members attitudes • Non-AITP members discouraged by 3 factors • Lack of time • Lack of money • Lack of knowledge about AITP • Effectiveness of CIS professors
Conclusions (continued) • My school verses other institutions • Addressing influential factors
