2. Objectives • I will identify the eight Millennium Development Goals Note: You’ll see the following pencil when a slide is connected with your PoP Student Workbook.

3. Vocabulary • Millennium Development Goals: The MDGs are eight goals that have been established by the United Nations to improve conditions around around the world by 2015. • United Nations: The United Nations is an international organization that works in the area of peace and security, development, human rights, humanitarian affairs and international law.

4. Quick Write • What are the inequalities that you see in your community? • What are the inequalities you believe exist in the world? If possible, give examples. When you’re finished, share your thoughts!

6. MDG 1 Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty “Reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day” • By 2015, there will still be 920 million people living off of $1.25 a day. • Sub-Saharan Africa has the greatest amount of poverty and hunger • “1 in every 4 children in the developing world is underweight”

7. MDG 2 “Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling” We will most likely not reach this goal Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia have the greatest amount of children out of school Amount of schooling is also affected by gender Achieve universal primary education 6

8. MDG 3 Promote gender equality and empower women “Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education” • Out of the nearly 800,000 Guatemalan children who do not have access to school, 2/3 of them are girls • Girls from poor homes are 3 times less likely to go to school than girls from wealthier families. • The ability for girls to attend school is also affected by how far away the school is from the home

MDG 4 Reduce the death of children under 5 years of age by 2/3 “In 2008, 10,000 fewer children died each day than in 1990” Efforts to treat and prevent pneumonia and diarrhea, as well as helping families better understand nutrition have helped with this cause “Under-five mortality remains high in Southern Asia” Reduce Child Mortality 8

10. MDG 5 Improve maternal health Reduce the death of mothers giving birth by 2/3 • Most likely, this goal will not be reached • The two main reasons for the death of women can be easily prevented, especially when women are cared by a professional and are educated on how to take care of themselves during pregnancy • Northern Africa has made the greatest improvement in this goal

11. MDG 6 Stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases This goal can be reached by educating people about how diseases are spread As of 2008, 33.4 million people have HIV/AIDS 17.5 million children have lost one or both parents due to AIDS Combat diseases 10

12. MDG 7 Ensure environmental sustainability Reverse the loss of environmental resources • The largest amount of deforestation is occurring in Oceania, South-Eastern Asia and Latin America • Tree planting programs have helped in this area • “The number of species facing extinction is growing by the day, especially in developing areas.” • Providing safe drinking water is also part of this goal

MDG 8 Address the special needs of the least developed countries, landlocked countries and small island developing states Develop further an open, rule-based, predictable, nondiscriminatory trading and financial system Deal comprehensively with developing countries’ debt Develop a global partnership for development 12
