  1. What do you imagine about these places? • Explain what you think • Heaven, if it exists, could be like • Hell could be like Heaven, Hell, Purgatory To describe heaven, hell and purgatory To evaluate different views of what Hell is To evaluate a life after death experience of hell and purgatory

  2. Write 3 headings in columns: hell, heaven, purgatory. Add the info below to where it belongs Explain the difference between purgatory and hell. **On Judgement day, hell becomes a “permanent” solution. Is this fair? Here people suffer because they recognise their sins, but they are also joyful as they know they are being purified to enter heaven. Here people are helped by the prayers of the Church to bear their suffering. People here refuse to recognise God’s goodness or to recognise their sins - they refuse to repent out of hatred and pride, and it causes them great discomfort, but they persist in it. They are the damned. A temporary state A permanent state Here souls rejoice in the vision of God, in peace and freedom, while awaiting the greater joy of the resurrection of their bodies

  3. Hell: different theories • Organise your theories to show • Which 2 are the Church’s teaching • Which do you find most convincing? • Hell is physical and spiritual pain : the burning “fire” of a sinner confronted by God’s holiness and love (like looking at the sun would burn your eyes, if you were not prepared for it) • Nothingness – complete darkness, isolation, no love or life, only your own miserable on-going existence. • The suffering of being forever separated from God, the source of all life and love • Hell cannot exist, or at least not permanently: • God loves everybody, and wants everybody to be saved. • Heaven couldn’t really be enjoyed if you knew that there were people suffering eternal punishment. Explain what the Church teaches about what makes hell unpleasant. Explain whichtheory of hell you find most convincing. Include why you don’t find one of the others convincing. **Should the Church talk more about hell, as they used to?

  4. An experience of life after death Did Howard Storm’s experience reflect what we have learnt about hell/ purgatory today? • Hell is • Nothingness • Suffering from knowing you are separated from God • Suffering physically and spiritually the rejection of God’s love • It wasn’t really hell
