Background • Data Management is a huge under undertaking • How to standardize the input of information • How to deal with data requests • How to make the centralized data available • The Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program was looking to CARMA to develop a system • It seems overwhelming so where do we start?

Data Management is a huge under undertaking • Data Governance – planning, supervision and control over data management and use • Data Development – analysis, design, building, testing, deployment and maintenance • Database Operations Management – support for structured physical data assets • Data Security Management – ensuring privacy, confidentiality and appropriate access • Data Warehousing & Business Intelligence Management – enabling access to decision support data for reporting and analysis • Meta Data Management – integrating, controlling and delivering meta data • Data Quality Management – defining, monitoring and improving data quality DAMA-DMBOK Functional Framework Version 3

How to standardize the input of information • Create the manuals – In progress • Add to the manuals a database using an easily accessible tool such as MS Access. • Include a reasonable data entry method. • Include the data field definition (Such as the data type, valid range, or list of valid values, definition and expected accuracy.)

  5. How to deal with data requests • Create a Data Sharing and Confidentiality agreement. (In progress or done) • Require metadata be created. (done) • Post the metadata where people can find it. (On ArcticNet) • Have a web presence where data can be stored and retrieved. (In progress) • Recognise that some data can not be shared.

  6. How to make the centralized data available • For now – post it to the CARMA website that has been developed. • Its not feasible to create an online database at this time.

  7. The Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program was looking to CARMA to develop a system • These recommendations don’t meet the expectation of the CBMP. • Your data will be ready should the resources become available.

It seems overwhelmingso where do we start? • That metadata continue to be a requirement and be posted to Arctic Net. • That an attempt to build an online “structured” database storage system not be attempted at this time. • That the CARMA website be used as a data custodian for the centralized storage of CARMA data.

It seems overwhelmingso where do we start? • That desktop solutions be promoted that facilitate the capture of common information in an identical structure. • That the protocols being developed include a database file template for capturing the protocol defined data. This template should include a database file, field definitions and relevant queries for data input and extraction. • That spatial a reference should be included in all data structures.

  10. Actions • Commit to creating metadata and posting it to ArcticNet. • Commit to posting data that can be posted to the CARMA website. • Commit to creating desktop tools to assist the compilation of data in a common format. • Recognise that data being collected will be shared.
