Potter: Kleophrades Painter: Kleophrades Painter Height: 56 cm Subject: Dionysos with satyrs and maenads 2 x 3 athletes on the neck.

  2. Kleophrades Painter Pointed Amphora • Dionysos holding a kantharos, wearing a leopard skin and carrying a grape vine – appropriate for the god and the use of the vase. • Maenads with thrysos, deer skins and snakes. • Their hair is tied up by a saccus

  3. Kleophrades Painter Pointed Amphora • Satyr playing an aulos wears a deer skin – he is ithyphallic. • On either side are maenads. To the right a maenad in the throes of orgasm – her head thrown back, the twist on the thyrsos and the foot breaking out of the border. Her hair is black and curly. • Maenad on the left is blond haired (dilute slip) and trips along lightly – a post orgasmic glow?
