Holy Orders. Grade 5. Holy Orders. A man is blessed in the name of Jesus Christ to serve God. A sacrament based upon the work of the Apostles. Only a Bishop can ordain A baptized man can become a Deacon, Priest, or Bishop. Purpose. 3 purposes of being ordained:

  2. Holy Orders • A man is blessed in the name of Jesus Christ to serve God. • A sacrament based upon the work of the Apostles. • Only a Bishop can ordain • A baptized man can become a Deacon, Priest, or Bishop

  3. Purpose • 3 purposes of being ordained: • To help grow as members of the Body of Christ. • To preach and teach God’s Word. • To celebrate the Sacraments.

  4. Deacon • Assist the Bishops and Priests • Proclaim the Gospel & Homily • Distribute Communion • Baptize • Bless Marriages • Preside over Funerals

  5. 2 Types of Deacons • Transitional • Preparing for the priesthood • Makes promises of celibacy • Will always obey the bishop • Permanent • Unmarried • Promise celibacy • Obey the bishop • Married • Obey the bishop

  6. Symbols • Alb: White Tunic dress-symbolizes purity • Stole: Scarf, color of the liturgical season. Symbolizes Authority (over left shoulder) • Cincture: Rope belt. Symbolizes their vow of chastity. • Dalmatic: Outer garment

  7. Ordained Priests • Co-workers of the bishop • Consecrated to preach the Gospel • Celebrate the sacraments • Care for the sick or poor • Lead community in prayer • Symbols • Alb • Stole (around neck) • Chasuble

  8. Ministries • Priests have a variety of ministries to choose from • Pastors • Teachers • Missionaries • Be a part of a religious order • Jesuits & Augustinians

  9. Bishops • Successor of the Apostles • Preaches the Gospel • Celebrates Sacraments • Specifically Confirmation & Holy Orders • Chief Shepherds • Rulers of the diocese

  10. Symbols • Ring • Symbolizes the bond between the Bishop and his people • Miter • Liturgical headdress • Symbolizes the office of the bishop • Front and back pieces of material represents the Old and New Testaments • Crosier • Staff • Symbolizes his role as chief shepherd

  11. Pope • Head of the Church. • The successor of St. Peter. • Pope Francis I

  12. Rite of Ordination Laying on of Hands: bringing on the Holy Spirit. Prayer of Consecration: asking God to send the Holy Spirit and consecrate these men in person of Jesus.
