  2. Selecting the Right Mobility Aid With more people living longer in countries around the world, the need for mobility aids has increased. It is a must to consider the needs and wants of those you help. Mobility aids are devices that help the elderly and disabled to get around better. The ability to move around better and getting the chance to do things that people in general would be able to do when not confined to a wheelchair is what mobility aids aim to provide.

  3. Whether your goal is to find a mobility aid or an assistive device such as a cane, you are likely to have a lot of choices. There are many types of mobility aids and assistive devices to help those with disabilities. From scooters to wheelchairs and walkers, there are many different types of devices you can use to help you get around. Here are five types of walking aids to select the right mobility aid or assistive device for you.

  4. 1. Selecting the Right Mobility Aid Think about your mobility needs and determine what will best meet them. Are you using a mobility aid for mobility or for an assistive device? A mobility aid will help you with everyday tasks such as moving from your bed to the bathroom, but it won’t provide support when walking or when transferring from one location to another. In contrast, an assistive device will provide greater support when walking and help you to overcome any obstacles, such as stairs. An example of an assistive device might be a cane.

  5. 2. Assessing Your Needs Knowing your mobility needs will help you to determine what type of mobility aid will be best for you. Think about your current mobility needs, as well as any future mobility needs. Do you have any mobility concerns right now that you will need to address? For example, if you plan to get up and down stairs regularly, you might need a mobility aid that is more appropriate for stairs than a mobility aid that will be used just in your home.

  6. 3. Make a List Once you know your mobility needs, you can make a list of the mobility aids that would best meet those needs. In addition to mobility aids, you may also want to consider other types of assistive devices, such as a wheelchair. If your goal is to find an assistive device to meet your mobility needs, there are many types of assistive devices to choose from, including canes, walkers, canes with grips, grab rails, bath lifts, bath chairs, etc.

  7. 4. Do Your Research Doing your own research can be helpful when selecting the right mobility aid or assistive device. You will want to understand the different mobility aids available, and you will want to find a provider that is knowledgeable about the types of mobility aids and assistive devices to help you select the one that will work best for you. In addition to learning about the different mobility aids and assistive devices available, you will want to learn about each device. Read reviews online, ask other people with disabilities if they have used a particular mobility aid or assistive device, and check out different types of mobility aids and assistive devices that you may be considering.

  8. 5. Try It Out Once you have determined that a particular mobility aid or assistive device is best for you, the next step is to try it out. If you have used a mobility aid before and it does not work for you, it’s best to try a different one. Similarly, if you have tried an assistive device and it does not work for you, it is best to try something different. It’s always important to try things out, so you will want to check them out before you make a final decision. This is especially true when you are planning to use a mobility aid or assistive device in a public setting.
