DO NOW! Describe the basic characteristics of an ALIEN…….
Aliens? • Video • Video 1 • Video 2 • Video 3
Aliens are…. • Not from this place • Potentially harmful • Might bring diseases • Might take over ecosystem • Unintentionally hostile • Use all the resources we have • Over populate
Objectives: • Discuss Aliens • Define invasive species • Determine how invasive or exotic species are like ALIENS • Examine the damage to the ecosystem • Examine specific species • Project
Invasive Species • An "invasive species" is defined as a species that is 1) non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration and 2) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. • http://www.invasivespeciesinfo.gov/whatis.shtml
Invasive species • Take over when introduced into a new ecosystem…. • WHY? Emerald Ash Borer
Invasive species have no natural predator in the new ecosystem • They either eat the native species • OR they eat the native species food • Change ecosystems by altering food chain • Overpopulation due to no predators
Effects • Can effect the environment ecologically or economically…. • What do I mean by ecological? • How about economical? • Ecologically they affect food webs and ecosystem structure. • Economically they affect profitable resources.
Meet your local invasive species • Get your notebook and write down each organism as we review it. • This is part of your study guide. • You will be adding information later so leave room by each one. • PA invasive species
HW : Worksheet • Read argument and completely answer questions on a separate sheet of paper. • We will review in class next class period.
PROJECT • You will be educating the public on invasive species. • You will choose from the hat and research that species. • See rubric for details.
Requirements • Name / description of the invasive species • Origin • Habitat • Mode of transportation • Threats to ecosystem / economy • Prevention • references
