Phases of the Moon • This picture shows why the moon doesn’t always look the same at night. • Half of the moon is always illuminated by the sunlight (pictured coming from right), but we don’t always see the whole bright side. • The dotted line from the earth to the moon shows what you see. 3 Sunl ight 4 2 5 1 6 7 8 • As the moon goes around the earth, we see different parts of its shadow. These different shadows are what we call phases.
