  1. The Parable of the Prodigal Son The Older Son: Two Sides of the Same Coin

  2. The Younger Son…. Luke 15:11-13 And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living.

  3. The Astounding Love of the Father… Luke 15:20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.

  4. The Astounding Love of the Father… Teaches that: God Allows us, at times, to go Wayward and Break Fellowship with Him, but… that He does so in a Romans 8:28Manner

  5. God is Gracious…. Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

  6. During All This… There was Another Brother… an Older Brother What does God Teach us Through Him?

  7. Luke 15:25-27 “Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound”

  8. How Did The Brother Respond? Luke 15:28-29 But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him,29 but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.

  9. The Older Brother… Lied… or has no realistic notion of evaluating himself… ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command”

  10. The Older Brother… Was less interested in his Father than he was in a party for his friends… “yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.”

  11. The Older Brother… Lived more like a slave than like a son… he expected reward for his work and had wages in view… failing to see grace

  12. Luke 15:30 29 ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’

  13. Luke 15:31-32 And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.32 It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’ ”

  14. The Two Sons Were Very Similar… Both were: “sons” --- both were saved self serving measured things in terms of the effect upon them viewed the father in terms of what the father did for them

  15. The Two Sons Were Very Similar… Neither were: Concerned with honoring the father Understood the fathers love Understood grace Were Content

  16. The Two Sons… Each needed a lesson that was geared specifically for them… that they would understand the Grace and Love of their Father… each were in different places… both depended upon self rather than their Father…

  17. The Principle that they Missed… Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

  18. Why Did They Miss This Reality? Because they were: Self Absorbed Reward --- rather than Grace oriented because this was the case, they were… Discontented

  19. Contentment… 1 Timothy 6:6-8 Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.

  20. Philippians 4:11-13 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

  21. Both Brothers Were… Concerned with self Without a contented spirit… because they did not understand Grace

  22. Do We Have A Little… Of these two Sons in us? Do we recognize… Hebrews 13:5b …be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

  23. Do We Realize That… Those that think they have earned their Father’s blessings tend to be… stingy, embittered, judgmental selfish and deeply insecure

  24. Do We Realize That… Such Law-oriented Thinking is Idolatry… Dishonoring onto God… Enslaving onto Self

  25. Freedom In Christ Galatians 5:1 For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

  26. The Parables’ Message In God’s Power… let us not think like either of the two sons in this parable… may the Lord impress upon us an understanding of His great Love and Grace

  27. The Challenge… So.. Forget about yourself and concentrate on Him and Worship Christ the Lord
