  1. Academic Policy 1405-13 Nomination for University and Distinguished Professor

Current • Review process is equivalent to appointment to a new position, uses FRC and Policy 1405.10 • A favorable recommendation of the chairperson and a majority of the faculty of the appropriate academic department or equivalent unit is a prerequisite for appointment to a university professorship. • Requires review by unit, college review committee and dean. • Units are to create criteria • No substantive criteria developed at the university level

  3. Proposed-Criteria • Appointment as University Professor or Distinguished Professor is a high honor reserved for only the very best faculty at the U of A in recognition of sustained excellence in the performance of their duties.

  4. University Professor • Long period of service at U of A in the rank of Professor (>10 yrs) • Three years removed from an administrative appointment (>50% admin workload) • Continuous and sustained exemplary service to the University • Have gained national and international recognition for sustained excellence in teaching, service and other scholoarly activity while at the U of A.

  5. Distinguished Professor • recognized nationally and internationally as an intellectual leader in ones academic discipline as a result of extraordinary accomplishments in research, teaching, published works, creative activities in the arts, or in other endeavors. • Indication the individual will continue to maintain national and international recognition in their field. • Accomplishments can be at U of A or elsewhere.

  6. Policies • Board Policy 405.1 • Academic policy 1405.11 • Expedited process for new hires • Academic policy 1405.101 • Accelerated for new hires • Tenure track faculty will create criteria at unit level. • Cannot be in conflict with or less stringent than 1405.13

  7. Process • Self Nomination allowed • Review in accordance with 1405-10 • FRC • External Review Letters • All tenure track faculty can vote during review of nominee. • University APT will review appeals • Chancellor is final approval authority

  8. Continuing Appointment • Subject to annual and post tenure review provisions of Academic Policy 1405.11
