  2. BackgroundLearning Management Systems (LMS) LMSs Provide a framework for : • Web Enhanced Courses – traditional face-to-face courses with online components • Partly Online Courses (PNET-Hybrid-Blended)30%-80% online • Fully Online Courses (FNET-Asynchronous)80%-100% online

Supported Learning Management Systems (LMS) at Queensborough • Blackboard –hosted by CUNY, currently at Bb, Inc. in VirginiaPros • Mature, robust – many features including Web 2.0 • All Courses and Students automatically populated each semester • Cons • Version 8, which we are using, is NOT well supported by Bb, Inc. • Sometimes viewed as unstable, but most outages are related to CUNY’s Login system (LDAP) and overloads of CUNY’s Network • Epsilen – hosted by the NY Times in Manhattan Pros • Includes four components: ePortfolio; Groups; Courses; Assessment Matrix • Includes Web 2.0 tools and Social Networking capability • Seems stable, but does not have the user load that Bb has • Cons • Courses, Groups, and Students membership must be established by each faculty member • Feature for feature it is not as robust as Bb, but it is getting better with time

Finding usable content to enhance the learning experience for 21st Century Students • Search Engines – Articles (text), Images, Data • Bing - http://www.bing.com/ • Google - http://www.google.com/ • Cuil - http://www.cuil.com/ • Google Squared - http://www.google.com/squaredPresents results in a matrix format • Wolfram Alpha – http://www.wolframalpha.com/ - Enter your question or calculation and Wolfram|Alpha uses its built-in algorithms and a growing collection of data to compute the answer
