  1. Mr. P’s Excellent PPT Assignment Bringing Authors & Works to Life Again!

  2. Author Analysis & Research 1st semester it was a thesis paper! Now it’s time to create a PPT so excellent your college prof will ask how you did it!

  3. PPT Project Goals • Acquaint yourself in-depth with a major author & a short key work • Share your findings via PPT & class presentation • Biography • Key short work • In-class analysis • Classroom handout • Grade = test (25 grades)

  4. PPT Project Basic Info • Must choose a different author from 1st semester project – full grade penalty! • May work in pairs or alone • Need to be ready on date scheduled on HE Web Calendar • Class requirement for passing grade in Honors English

  5. PPT Project Guidelines • 10-12 minutes in length • No fewer than 10 slides • PPT must contain… • your own design template • engaging, appropriate graphics (1 per page) • at least one intelligent sound byte • live weblink to quality site • readable slide of your “key work” & any guide questions or other info HINT: Find graphics & sound bytes specific to your author!

  6. Author PPT Research • Six authoritative resources – 3 print & 3 web • No online or print encyclopedias!- this includes Wikipedia! • Annotated bibliography in MLA format What does annotated mean? An annotated bibliography is one that includes a sentence or two after each entry that details the information found in that source. See example on HE web!

  7. Author Biography Info • Key dates – including birth & death • List of all “major” works • Pertinent biographical details- key factors that brought recognition - what this author is remembered for ABT voidoringrivia

  8. Presentation Class Handout • Likeness of your author (front) • Bio info highlights with space for classmate to add or fill-in notes (front) • Key work you are analyzing (back) • May contain key lit/vocab info (back) • Due day before presentation! That’s so Mr. Paynehas time to copy this sheetfor the class!

  9. Presentation Advice • Your PPT is to be presented, NOT read! • You are in charge – not the computer! • Face the students, not the screen! • Speak slowly, confidently, and loudly • Breathe deep – have fun Everyone has survived – even me and no one knows if I am really me! The horror! The horror!

  10. PPT Deadlines & Grading • Check HE Web calendar for due dates • Grading Rubric also posted on HE web • Grade = test (25 grades – same as test) • 1/3 deduct if “test drive” not pre-arranged • Class handout due day BEFORE your presentation • Bring to day of presentation - mini-slide print out - annotated bibliography - slide template explanation

  11. Four More Project Hints • Save your files to your school drive or email to honorseng@fvlhs.org. If your files are too big, you can break into two or three PPTs by using “save as” and reassemble at school. • Be sure to test everything BEFORE you come to class -- bad things can easily happen if you don’t. Have a back-up plan. • Practice! Practice! Practice! The best way to beat the “I’m-gonna-be-at- the-front-of-the-class” jitters is to know your material so well you can ignore everything else! • Ask if you need help! The English Dept web page and FVL Intranet page have help links! You must be ready on the posted date – we will not have time to reschedule presentations. Failure to complete this project will result in a full grade drop of your final grade.

  12. Quirky PPT advice • Remember Room 2308 has PPT 2010 – if your PPT is done at home, things may not look or run the same… • Be aware of sound files and fonts. Always choose to “embed fonts” when saving. Sound files typically aren’t embedded into your PPT – need to bring along separately and link to PPT. • Easiest way to avoid these problems is to bring in your own laptop and hook up to projector & speakers. (Arrange to try this before your presentation to make sure all the right cords are available & you are comfortable with the set up!)

  13. Which Authors are “Available”? • Check the Honors English Web Calendar – look for names! • Remember to check the due dates! • You have a wide variety of different authors • CHOICE Day is ??? – for partners & authors! Come ready or get the leftovers! Unclaimed authors can be grabbed for EXTRA CREDIT

  14. Author Name List • John Milton • John Bunyan • Daniel Defoe • Jonathon Swift • Alexander Pope • The Hymnwriters • Robert Burns • Thomas Gray • William Blake • William Wordsworth • Lord Byron • Percy B. Shelley • Mary Shelley • John Keats • Alfred Lord Tennyson • Elizabeth Barrett Browning • Dante & Christina Rossetti • Charlotte Bronte • Jane Austen • Lewis Carroll • T.S. Eliot • A. A. Milne • J. M. Barrie • Rudyard Kipling • Thomas Hardy • George Orwell • Roald Dahl • Virginia Woolf • Katherine Mansfield • C.S. Lewis • J.R.R. Tolkien

  15. 4th Quarter – Class Project • Retelling Robin Hood project • Groups of 2-3 • Due – May 7-9 • Find your groupies – assignment sheets coming later!
