Search Strategies • Put your question or problem into words. • If you can, include a relevant noun, adjective and verb in your query. • Are the words you have used keywords or intermediaries? • Did you use any stop (ignored) words or clutter (little effect) words? • Are the words spelled correctly? Some search engines care! • Sometimes putting the important words first helps.
Don’t Forget The Nyms! • Synonyms – words that mean the same as, e.g. hound is a synonym for dog. • Hypernyms – words with more general meanings e.g. animal is a hypernym for dog. • Hyponyms – words with more specific meanings e.g. Dalmatian is a hyponym for dog. • If a query isn’t working try replacing your keywords or intermediaries with one of the 'nyms. You can use a thesaurus to help you.
