  3. Introduction • perseverance (upomonh) – steadfastness, constancy, endurance • characteristic of one who is not swerved from his purpose or faith by even the greatest trials • the promise of Heaven is worth more than any trial or temptation we may face (Heb. 12:1-3) • while we have self-control to be faithful today, will we stand day in and day out?

  4. The Role of Perseverance • perseverance is needed in order to weather trials without growing weary • life will not always be easy (2 Tim. 3:10-12) • yet, if focused on goal, then joy (Col. 1:9-12) • impatience also leads to temptation when seeking shortcuts (Gal. 6:7-9) • the passing pleasure of sin (Heb. 11:24-26) • but we must continue God’s path (Rom. 2:5-9)

  5. Growing in Perseverance • be assured of your goal • (Rom. 15:4-6; 8:23-25) • take one day at a time • (Mt. 6:33-34)(Heb. 3:12-14) • trials and temptations have their purpose • (Rom. 5:1-4)(James 1:2-4) • pray and know you are not alone • (James 1:5-6)(2 Cor. 1:3-11)

  6. Conclusion • as spiritual growth takes a lifetime, all need to develop patience to see to the end • promise of bearing fruit, salvation (Lk. 8:11-18) • do not be distracted by trials, temptations • also, one who perseveres knows that to stumble is temporary, to walk is eternal • forgiveness and grace (1 Jn. 1:5-10)
