  2. Charles Kettering • Born: August 29, 1876 • Charles Kettering invented the first automobile self-starter in 1911. • He also, held more than 300 patents. Most of them were used with automobiles.

  3. Garrett Morgan • Born: March 4, 1877 • Garrett Morgan invented the first traffic signal after witnessing a car accident between an automobile and a buggy. • He also, received a patent for the traffic light in 1923.

  4. John W. Lambert • Born: September 5, 1851 • John W. Lambert invented the first gasoline-powered, single-cylinder automobile. • This automobile could reach speeds up to five miles per hour.

  5. Orville and Wilbur Wright • Born: Orville Wright- August 19, 1871 and Wilbur Wright- April, 16, 1867 • The Wright brothers owned a bicycle shop in Dayton. • They created wing designs for an airplane. • They successfully flew the first airplane on December 17, 1903. • The first flights lasted less than a minute.

  6. Thomas Edison • Born: February 11, 1847 • Thomas Edison created lots of inventions, but was most known for the light bulb and phonograph. • He also, has 1,093 patents.

  7. James Ritty • Born: October 29, 1836 • He was a Dayton resident. • James Ritty invented the first cash register in 1878. • This invention kept track of the number of sales and the amount of each sale.

  8. Granville T. Woods • Born: April 23, 1856 • Granville T. Woods invented the multiplex railway telegraph. • This invention improved railroad safety.
