  2. Battle of Spotslyvania May 8 – 21, 1864 By Annie McKee General Grant sent a march south to get around General Lee’s flank. Lee knew about this and was waiting for them in Spotslvania. On May 8 Union forces began the attack on the secure Confederate line. For the next six days Grant unsuccesfully assaulted the Confederate line. Battle of Cold Harbor May 8-11 May 5-7, 1864 May 12 May 13-18 May 19-21 May 26-June 3,1864 On May 19 Grant moved south again to attempt another flanking. Some Union generals were killed. Some Confederate generals were also captured or badly wounded too. On May 21 Grant disengaged and continued on to Richmond. This was a greatloss for the Union. On May 12, Grant launched a huge assault on the “Bloody Angle”, or the western side of Mule Shoe, as the projection came to be known. Twice Grant split Lee’s army, but each time a ferocious attack sent them back. Grant’s Wilderness Campaign Casualties Union=17,000 Confederate=8,000
