  2. The Demographic Trap Demographic trap – a situation in which near core and far periphery countries continue to experience a high birth rate instead of the declining birth rate of the late transition stage – these countries do not reach post transition

  3. The Demographic Trap High birth rate + declining death rate = increase in population Increase in population places greater demands on country for an increased food supply, and for services such as healthcare and education

  4. Consequences country does not have enough revenue to promote social and economic development country does not have carrying capacity to support increase in population Demands of growing populations will exceed their countries carrying capacity – this overpopulation

  5. Overpopulation • Affects the availability of: • Food • Education • Employment

  6. Population Control: India & China Two most populous countries in the world Have more than 37% of world’s population Both have reduced fertility rates through government-driven population control

  7. India • India is predicted to surpass China’s population by 2050 • Government has put a policy in place to help slow down population growth • The policy is an incentive program to encourage citizens to have fewer children

  8. India • Stricter laws have also been put into place to limit births • Family planning (education, contraceptives, sterilization, etc.) • Special rewards for families who have no more than two children, marry after the legal age and have 1st child after 21 years old, accept a terminal method after birth of 2nd child.

  9. China • China is the most populated country in the world (approx 50% of world’s population) • India is predicted to overtake China by 2050 • “Nearly 99% of all population increase takes place in poor countries”(PRB)

  10. China • One Child Policy • Families only allowed to have one child • If have more than one are fined • Have women who monitor family growth and provide abortions to mothers who are pregnant with second child
