  1. Welsh Society of Referee Training Evenings Understanding the Scrum

  2. Understanding The Scrum • Basic understanding of how to referee the scrum. • We should be able to deal with issues regarding the scrum. • Allow us to be confident in managing this area of the game.

  3. Agenda • Pre Engagement. • During Engagement. • Post Engagement

  4. Pre Engagement • Pre match talk. • All front row players, front row. replacements and scrum half. • Explain your Scrum procedure. • Crouch and Hold, Engage. • Under 19’s Crouch, Touch, Pause, Engage. • Zero Tolerance on early engagement.

  5. During Engagement • Front rows hips to be square facing downfield. • Legs to be square not pointing in at an angle. • Six shoulders to be seen (not to open). • We need front rows to be same height . • Props binding MUST be on the body and NOT on arm. • Props to push through straight and not at angle. • All front row to remain in pushing position. • Scrum to be steady and square before put in.

  6. Post Engagement • Need Props to push straight and through the scrum. • Back row must stay bound to the scrum with ONE FULL arm. • Watch for DELIBERATE wheeling of scrum. Props push back and 2nd rows step out of scrum. (Penalty kick) • Gradual wheel is fine all players remaining bound and maintaining pushing position. • 90 Degrees, Turn over ball. • Under 19’s - 45 Degrees same put in.

  7. Post Engagement • Scrum half is offside if he is in front of the ball. • Scrum Half- A credible feed. • Scrum half MUST NOT touch the scrum whilst the ball is still in OR the number 8 is still bound.

  8. Collapsed / Pop Up Scrums • DO NOT GUESS. • BLOW UP IMMEDIATELY. • DO NOT PLAY ON OR ADVANTAGE. • SAFETY is PARAMOUNT at all times.

  9. Collapsed Scrums - Outcomes • Options Available :- • Reset. • Penalty. • Penalty Try.

  10. Uncontested Scrums • For All WRU League and Cup Games:- • Game CAN start with uncontested scrums. • NO replacements can be used by side electing to start with passive scrums. • The circumstances in which games go to uncontested scrums should be sent to the Union office.

  11. Uncontested Scrums • Side putting in the ball must win it. • Scrum Half can follow ball around. • Number 8 can pick up.

  12. Replacements • All front row replacements must be suitably trained. • You cannot replace tactically all members of the front row. • You can replace two members of the front row tactically and one through injury who therefore becomes a permanent substitution.

  13. Overview • Understand the mechanics of the scrum. • Know the Law. • Above all DO NOT COMPROMISE ON SAFETY.
