Types of social media • Social networks: Allow user to connect with other learners with similar interests and backgrounds. • Bookmarking sites: Allow learners to save, organize and manage links to various websites. • Social news: Allow learners to post various new items or links to outside articles. • Media sharing: Allow learners to upload and share various media. • Microblogging: Focus on short updates that are pushed out to anyone subscribed to receive updates. • Blog comments and forums: Allow members to hold conversations by posting messages.

Uses of social media in education • Exchange information: Learners can generate their own learning content and take advantage of collective content. • Facilitate communication: Learners can “pull in” concepts and ideas outside formal learning sessions. • Personalize the learning experience: Allowing learners to gather information and learn when they need it rather tan users generate content that meets a specific audience. • Support informal learning: Learners need information on demand. How they access and use the information determines their effectiveness in the workplace. • Create immerse learning environments: Immersive learning technologies support the customization of learning.
