By the end of this workshop, you will be able to: • understand the orientation of the library website in order to locate needed library resources and services. • use the library online catalogue and 1-search to search for information for your research topics. • identify sources for finding information that is not available in LU Library.

  13. Finding Information • From the Library Online Catalogue • Find books, journals, AV, etc. • How to get access?

  14. Scenario One : If I already know the Author’s Name of a book… Q: I want to read the book written by J.K. Rowling in 2012. However I forgot the title of the book, what should I do? A: Search the Library Catalogue by Author. Be sure to search by placing the SURNAME in front of the first name. In this example, you should search “Rowling, J.K.”

Scenario Two: If I want to find books for my research project but don’t have any titles/authors in mind • Question: I want to find books for my research project on Hong Kong film industry? • Answer: • Search the Library Catalogue by keywords (“hong kong ” and (film or cinema or motion picture) in the Advanced Search page • Limit the Material type: book and Year : After 2008

  17. 3. Type in the keywords and choose appropriate limitations, then click “Submit” button Type the keyword you want to search for • To LIMIT the results by choosing: • Publishing Year • You may further limit your search to: • Location in the Library • Language of the item • Material type

Viewing Bibliographical Record • After searching for books or other items in the Library Catalogue, here below are important tips for you to find out WHERE the book is: • LOCATION of the item (where it is stored) • CALL NUMBER of the item (the exact address) • STATUS of the item (available now or not)

Scenario Three: If I want to find journal articles for my research project • Question: I am looking for journal articles for my research project about human resources management in South Africa • Answer: Conduct a key word/advanced key word search in 1-Search. • The Boolean Operators AND, OR and NOT must be written in ALL CAPS. • Words in a specific order use " ". e.g. “human resources management “, “south africa” • Demo:

HKALL – Borrowing from other Local Libraries • HKALL = Hong Kong Academic Library Link (香港高校圖書聯網) allows you to request for books not available at Lingnan but available at HKU, CUHK, HKUST, PolyU, CityU, HKBU or HKIEd -- delivered to Lingnan normally within 3 working days • Access: http://hkall.hku.hk/search/ • Material type: Books • Quota: Up to 10 books at the same time • User Guide: http://libguides.ln.edu.hk/hkall

  31. Procedures of Ordering Book from HKALL If the book cannot be found in our Library catalogue, you can click “Search HKALL” button to see if the book can be found in other HKALL Libraries Level 2

  32. Afterwards, you can see the book record in HKALL. Click to open detail list Level 2

  33. The table will show which libraries have the items available, and click “Request this title” Level 2
