Beginning of the 19th century • many European immigrants: • east + north = industry (abolished slavery by 1800) • south = slavery on plantations • 1803 Lousiana bought from France • 1819 Florida bought from Spain for 4mil.$ • 1812-1814 American - British War loss • Canada remained British • 1845 Texas • 1846-48 American -Mexican War • California and other states joined the UNION
