  2. OBJECTIVES & SCOPE Improve soil protection and sustainability, grape quality and yield stability through the development and application of an innovative by-product (ZEOWINE) derived from winery wastes and natural zeolites Key actions Development of ZEOWINE: composting of winery wastes and zeolites; Definition of ZEOWINE composting protocol Application of ZEOWINE on young and productive vineyard; Monitoring soil, plant, grape and wine quality; Definition of fertilization protocols Grazia Masciandaro, Senior Researcher

  3. EXPECTED IMPACTS Waste: Winery wastes Rawmaterials: Mineralfertilizer Grazia Masciandaro, Senior Researcher

  4. POLICY IMPLICATIONS • The project will contribute to the pursuit of these EU objectives: • to reduce landfilling and increase the recycling of organic waste materials (Circular Economy Package COM (2015) 614 final) • creation of a single market for fertilizers obtained from secondary raw materials, thus transforming waste management problems into economic opportunities (Proposal for a regulation of 17 March 2016 (COM (2016) 157 final) • to achieve the sustainable development Obj. 12 on sustainable production and consumption models (Communication "Europe’s • sustainable future: next steps”) • increase in biodiversity of associated soil and plant, thus implementing the EU 2020 strategy for Biodiversityand the Global Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 • to protect the soil and preserve its capacity to perform its • ecological, economic, social and cultural functions • COM (2006) 231 Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection Grazia Masciandaro, Senior Researcher

  5. CONTINUATION (REPLICATION, TRANSFER, MARKET UPTAKE) • The actions envisaged after the end of the project in the after-life plan aimed at: • - transferring the results achieved at the level of NRDP National Rural Development Planning and RRDP Regional Rural Development Plans through concrete actions by the public partners CNR and UNIFI; • - promote the application of the ZEOWINE product and related protocols in the wineries through a direct action on vineyards and winemaking companies and the elaboration a business plan with related marketing solutions; • - develop further actions/projects, aimed at transferring the results achieved by the project in other agricultural productive chains, by research institutions and universities also in other European countries through the Network of partners CNR and UNIFI • Possible market uptake should be verified between 2 possibilities: • DISTRIBUTION METHOD, intended as marketing of the ZEOWINE product • PRODUCTION METHOD, intended as marketing of the ZEOWINE production process directly at the final company user that benefits from the onsite use of their own compost for the production of ZEOWINE Grazia Masciandaro, Senior Researcher
