Regional Energy Centre of Western Greece (1998-2002*) Basic conclusions • Transport the most energy-consuming (50%) • High electricity demand in housing sector (36%) • Strong dependence on fossil fuels, limited RES (2,1%) • Transport the highest percentage in CO2 emmissions(66%) • Public lighting 4% of energy consumption *Suspended its action due to lack of funding

  5. 2. Covenant of Mayors • Signed on 06/11/2008 • Preparation of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) for the City of Patras is underway with the assistance of the National Centre for Renewable Energy Sources (CRES)

Program EXOIKONOMO (Energy Saving) • Implementation of Energy Efficiency in Municipalities (>10.000 inhabitants) • Aims at: • Improvement of Energy Efficiency at local level • Promotion of Demonstration Actions with immediate results • Sensitisation of Citizens • Sensitisation of Local officials

Program EXOIKONOMO (Energy Saving) • Axis 1: existing municipal buildings (55-65%) • Energy upgrade of the building shell for the reduction in heating and cooling demand • Energy upgrade of the electro-mechanical installations for the increase of energy efficiency of municipal buildings • Upgrade of the system of natural/artificial lighting • Installation of energy management system (BEMS) with a monitor for projecting the results to the citizens • Axis 2: public urban spaces (15-25%) • Axis 3: urban transport (0-15%) • Axis 4: municipal technical infrastructure (0-4%) • Axis 5: dissemination, networking and updating of municipal officials (0-4%)

Examples of interventions • Building Shell • External sunshades • Thermal insulation • Replacement of old windows, doors and frames • Green roof • Electromechanical installations for heating/cooling • Central air-conditioning instead of independent units • Replacement of old boiler with newer of higher performance • Insulation of the central heating column and of the pipes • Energy management (BEMS) • Integrated Electronic management system

Dissemination, Networking, Publicity • Information towards the Energy Manager of the Municipality for the interventions and the proposed mode of function for the buildings • Information towards the Engineers of the Municipality • Presentation to Users of the Buildings (employees, citizens, students, teachers) of the interventions, the expected results and the functioning of the new systems • Annual evaluation of the energy consumption of the buildings and information to the users

  14. 6. Other Actions • Small amounts of energy-saving lighting introduced each year based on initiative of the Head of Department of City Lighting (e.g. Square Kapodistrias)
