  1. Freeze Thaw Action Done By: Stacy, Heng Yeng and Shi Mei 306

  2. Definition • Known as frost shattering or frost disintegration • Mechanical weathering

  3. Factors – Location • Alpine and periglacial areas • Must have a lot of moisture • Temperatures must fluctuate above and below freezing point • Soil must be frost-susceptible

  4. Factors – Types of rock • Porous and fine • Fine-grained rocks with water absorbency • E.g. Chalk, sandstone, limestone etc.

  5. Process • Rainwater fills into cracks(joints) of rock or mountains • Temperature drops below freezing point  water freezes to become ice

  6. Process Water expands 10% when frozen The ice causes pressure on the walls of the joints  cracks widen and deepen

  7. Process • Ice thaws  water lies deeper in joints • Freeze thaw cycle continues  joints grow larger  rock collapses/breaks into pieces

  8. Resultant Landform • Smaller pieces of rock from collapsed rock • Known as scree • Can be found on the sides of many mountains Coloredscree slopes of Mt. Brennisteinsalda
