  1. PMB, WP3 - Novel Condition Monitoring and Fault Detection Techniques and Technologies - Progress Report – Simon Hogg 10 May 2018

  2. Recruitment – RA’s, RF’s & PhD Students Recruited 3.1. Determining the condition of lubricated components through monitoring of oil condition (LP Durham – Crabtree – 1 RA). Dr Crabtree is on shared parental leave until 15th July 2018. He has been granted research leave for the first two terms of the 2018/19 academic year. Further discussion with Ørstedneeded to full define the scope of the work package – ongoing. A PDRA is currently available to work on the project. 3.2. Condition monitoring of wind turbine bearings through fusion of vibration-based health monitoring and acoustic emission (AE) features (LP Sheffield – Wordon – 2 PhD students). In planning, project scheduled to start end of year 1.

  3. Recruitment – RA’s, RF’s & PhD Students Recruited 3.3. Systems level integration of fault detection and isolation with condition monitoring (LP Hull – Patton – 0.5 RF). 3.4. Verification and validation of fault detection and condition monitoring schemes (LP Hull – Patton – 0.5 RF). Band 7 Research Fellow, this has been converted to a Band 7 PDRA due to recruitment difficulties, post currently going through approval process. The person appointed will work on WP3.3 and 3.4. Dr Guo’s(fault detection expert from Suzhou University of Science and Technology, China,) visit (originally July 18 – Apr 19) delayed. May not now be able to come until early in 2019. Two existing/recent PhDs have been working on Fault Tolerant Control for turbine pitch control systems. Results have been included into two papers: ‘Fault-tolerant wind turbine pitch control using adaptive sliding mode estimation’, J. Lan, R.J. Patton, X. Zhu, Renewable Energy, February 2018. ‘Fault-tolerant Individual Pitch Control using Adaptive Sliding Mode Observer’, Y. Liu, R.J. Patton, J. Lan, IFAC Symposium Safeprocess, August 2018.

  4. Recruitment – RA’s, RF’s & PhD Students Recruited 3.5. Generator and converter fault analyses, including open- and short-circuits, and health and condition monitoring (LP Sheffield – Zhu – 2 PhD students). PhD: Jin Xu – ‘Control of multi-3-phase converters with asymmetries and faults’, 1/10/2017, Mathematical modelling of dual-three phase machines with different angle displacements. PhD: Tianyi Liu – ‘Self-sensing under unbalanced or fault condition’, 1/12/2017, Literature review report & presentation completed Inductance unbalance and variation analysis.

  5. Progress against tasks for each Work Package and plan for next 3 months Principal actions for next 3 months are: Durham to fully define scope for project 3.1 with Ørsted, to allow project to start soon after Dr Crabtree’s return to work. Monitor project 3.2 preparation by Sheffield to start at end of year 1. Approval and recruitment to RA post by Hull needed to start projects 3.3 & 3.4. Sheffield to progress project 3.5.

  6. Risks and Opportunities • Principal risks are: • Securing RA resource for projects 3.3 & 3.4. • Durham need to get 2-way agreement in place with Ørsted for project 3.1 and the 5 other DU/Ørsted projects that contribute to other Work Packages. Durham currently progressing this withØrsted legal team in Denmark.
