  1. Energy Efficient Ethernet Encoding CS294-14 ProjectProposal Fall 2007 10October 2007 Tracy Wang Yanpei Chen

  2. Project Objectives Analyze existing Ethernet data encodings for energy efficiency If possible, propose and analyze new energy efficient codes

  3. State of the Art – EEE New field – we don’t know any publications Current work in IEEE 803.3 Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) Study Group Focus on reducing Ethernet transmission speed Motivated by “bursty” traffic with low long-term average data rate Negotiate lower transmit speed using protocol handshake Pause traffic rather than lower speed proposed for optical PHYs

  4. New Idea – EEEE Energy Efficient Ethernet Encoding (EEEE) Existing Ethernet data encodings not designed for energy efficiency Examine existing encodings for 100Mbps, 1Gbps, 10Gbps Ethernet See if there are opportunities to improve energy efficiency Totally new approach Orthogonal to work currently in EEE Low hanging fruit Already have more energy efficient code for 100Mbps Need to investigate BW, EMF, DC average, noise tolerance properties

  5. Project Risks Low risk project – we need only the following: Learning about state of the art in existing codes Apply probabilistic analysis to prove energy efficiency Matlab simulations to verify Talk to colleagues in Cory Hall

  6. Project Timeline Status: Learned about current work in IEEE 802.3 EEE Study Group By Week 09 – learn the state of the art of existing Ethernet encodings By Week 11 – complete energy efficiency analysis on existing encodings By Week 13 – complete proposal and analysis of new encodings Thereafter – report and presentations
