1040 Group Project

This study investigates the correlation between a person's age and the number of hours they sleep each night. Using a systematic random sampling method, we surveyed adults to gather data on their age and average sleep duration. We analyzed the data with histograms and boxplots, noting the presence of lurking variables and outliers. Our findings indicate that there is no significant correlation between age and sleep hours, with a correlation coefficient of -0.165, which falls below the critical value for significance.

  2. Study Design: Is a person’s age related to how many hours of sleep they receive each night Conducted a systematic random sampling of individuals Surveyed adults to find their age and the average number of sleep hours and minuets they are currently receiving Compared both sets of data to find a possible correlation Explanatory Variable: Age Response Variable: Hours

  4. Data Converted

  5. Histograms

  6. Boxplots There are Lurking variables with age data, 2 outliers, This is not normal.

  7. Summary Statistics

  8. • Points are distributed all over the graph• They do not decrease/increase along with the least squares regression line• Simply by looking at the scatterplot, there is no major indication of correlation between Age and Hours. Scatterplot

  9. Testing for Correlation The critical value for a correlation coefficient for a sample size of 49 is 0.279 Correlation between Age and Hours is: -0.16564344 The correlation coefficient is not at least as high as the critical value.
