  1. Analysis of Earthquake Proof House Manhasset Science Research

  2. Need • The 2008 Sichuan earthquake costs about $146.5 billion Murphy, 2009

  3. Knowledge Base • Stress and Strain, Drift Capacity Valsaraj, 2004 Heaton, 2009

  4. Knowledge Base • Yielding, Kim, 2009 Murphy, 2009

  5. Literature Review • Moehle, 2008, “Seismic Design of Reinforced Concrete Special Moment Frames.” U.S. Department of Commerce. Moehle, 2008

  6. Literature Review • Stewart, 2006, “ Input Ground motions for tall buildings with subterranean levels.” University of California. Stewart, 2006

  7. Purpose • The purpose of this experiment is to provide an alternative, performance based approach for seismic design and the analysis of tall buildings.

  8. Engineering Goals • The different infrastructures designs will have a much higher resistance against a simple frame structure.

  9. Protocols • Fixed Base (Control) • Pinned Base • “Grade- Beams” extended to adjacent moment frame column bases (Ex. Reinforced concrete adjacent to the original frame) • base supported by springs for a flexible foundation.

  10. Do-ability

  11. Structural Analysis 1/group Spring- supported foundation Fixed Base (Control) “Grade- Beams” extended to adjacent moment frame column bases Pinned Base 20 second durations of different magnitudes on the shake table; analyze any structural failure and permanent yielding. Statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA followed by a Scheffe post hoc test to see if there is a significant difference between the proposed designs and the traditional design
