  1. National 5 Reading for Understanding Skills

  2. Questions on imagery Metaphors, similes, personification

  3. Imagery is the technique used for helping the reader to imagine what the writer is describing by comparing it to something else which has similar qualities. • Examples of types of image are: • Metaphor (saying that one thing is something else) • Simile (saying that one thing is like or as something else) • Personification (giving an inanimate object the characteristics of a living thing)

  4. You will be asked to explain why a particular image is effective in the passage. • The question might mention the type of image or might just use the term image. • To answer these questions you should: • Identify the image and what type it is… • The author uses a metaphor to compare a road with a ribbon • Suggest what is similar about these two things… • Like a ribbon that falls in a twisted, curving shape, the road bends and turns around the contours of the land.

  5. Some metaphors are nouns. Try explaining why each of the following is successful: Her home was a prison. Like a prison, her home is impossible to escape from and is not a very pleasant or comfortable place. George is a sheep. The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas. My father is a rock.. I'm noangel, but I wouldn't behave like that.

  6. Other metaphors are created with adjectives and verbs. Try these examples: The new movie was very popular. People flocked to see it. Tim lost his job after a heated argument with his boss. It wasn't long before their relationship turned sour. Hebroke into her conversation. The private detective dug up enough evidence to convince the police to act. His head was spinning with ideas.

  7. Similes are more obvious but are explained in exactly the same way. Here are some examples: Your eyes are like the sun. Like the sun, her eyes are bright, give him a happy feeling, and make him feel warm. He eats like a pig. His hair was like mouldy hay. When she kissed him, he turned as red as a tomato. I feel as fresh as a daisy.

  8. Here are some examples of personification to practise: The sun peeked from behind a cloud. Like a shy person, reluctant to be seen, the sun is just visible from behind the edge of the cloud. It is not fully out. The angry sky roared. News travels fast. The trees danced in the wind. The gentle wind caressed my cheeks.
