Capitalization. By: Manmeet Gill. Capitalization. Is the writing of a word with its first letter in uppercase and the remaining letters in lowercase. You capitalize the first letter in a sentence. You also capitalize the first letter in a quotation. Ex: I like pie.

  2. Capitalization Is the writing of a word with its first letter in uppercase and the remaining letters in lowercase. You capitalize the first letter in a sentence. You also capitalize the first letter in a quotation. Ex: I like pie. Sam said, “Hi Mrs. Smith.” The three things that you need to know how to capitalize the most are titles, directions, and names.

  3. Titles • Generally, these parts of speech are capitalized in titles: nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, and subordinating conjunctions. Proper nouns are usually capitalized. The first letter in a title is capitalized. Articles are usually not capitalized unless they are at the beginning of a title. Titles can refer to books, magazines, movies, newspapers, etc. Ex: New York Times James and the Giant Peach

His favorite book is “ charlie and the chocolate factory. 4. We have to read “the outsiders” this year. 5. I hate the movie “romeo and juliet”

  6. Directions When you are describing a direction (south, east, north, west), it is lowercase. Ex: The map is behind a secret door on the south wall. When you are naming a region, it is capitalized. Ex: Atlanta, New Orleans, and Mobile are all in the South.

  7. Practice problems Capitalize each direction that needs to be capitalized. • But I an originally from the south, but now I live in the north. • Go 5 spaces west. • Are you from the east. • Canada is found in the north. • You will find at the south wall.

Names Some types of names that you capitalize are: names of people, mountain ranges, bodies of water, buildings, monuments, bridges and tunnels, street names, stores, states, cities, schools, colleges, universities, Mrs., Mr., months, and days of the week. You would also capitalize things like aunt, uncle, grandmother, grandfather, but only if they had a name coming after them and only if they do not have “if’ before them. Ex: North Gwinnett Middle School Mary Kate Lincoln Memorial Atlantic Ocean Mount Everest October Monday Atlanta New Jersey Aunt Sally Mr. Tammer Wal-Mart
