  1. Helping Students Format Papers

Professional Development Presenter: Kiwanna Brackett April 26, 2012
  2. What are our expectations? We expect student’s on a collegiate level to have some knowledge of conducting research and formatting papers.
  3. Is this how students respond to your research assignments?
  4. Basic guidelines when assigning research papers: We must not assume that are students have had experience writing research papers, or know that a format exists. We must provide clear instructions and/or guidelines for students that help them understand our expectations. Do you prefer APA or MLA format? What style is recommended for them to learn specific to industry standards? Does your department or program of study require knowledge of a specific style?
  5. Basic guidelines (cont.) We should provide students with resources that can assist them in learning the requested format. The most cost efficient way to accomplish this is by providing specific websites that can guide them through the process. Make a list of 3 or 4 websites that you would recommend.
  6. Selecting a style The two most commonly used formatting styles are APA and MLA. How do you choose? Use APA Style for subjects related to the social sciences, such as business, criminal justice, economics, law, and medical subjects, including nursing and psychology. Use MLA Style for subjects related to the humanities and liberal arts, such as literature, mass communications, and media studies.
  7. Formatting Basics Paper – Use clean, good quality 8 ½” x 11” white paper, one side only. Margins – leave margins of your essay/report 1” at the top, bottom, left and right sides of each and every page. Title page – Specify for students if a title page will be required. MLA – Top of first page APA – Separate page Numbering pages and Paragraphs – specify if page numbers will be required on each page.
  8. Formatting basics (cont.) Font size and type Spacing between lines Spacing between words Indentation Citing sources in text and work-cited page Avoiding Plagiarism Preliminary pages Table of contents Abstract/ Executive Summary Concluding paper Keeping paper together
