History of Mass Killings http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rampage_killers:_School_massacres Normally, killings like the one in Newtown were done by people with mental illness, like the Virginia Tech shootings. However, the Sandy Hook Elementary Shootings were done by a twenty-year old boy with no mental illness. Adam Lanza, the shooter, had autism, and was described as ‘intelligent, but nervous and fidgety’ (Wikipedia). These are not qualities you would find in a killer. You would expect someone like this to be smart and athletic.

  3. The shooter, Adam Lanza, entered the building around 9:30 AM. He carried three guns. He shot through the glass doors to enter. • The principal, vice-principal, and school psychologist were currently in a meeting with a concerned parent. The parent was worried that her second-grader’s grades were dropping. • They heard gunshots outside. The psychologist, principal, and vice-principal went out to see what was going on. The shooter lethally shot the principal and the psychologist, while the vice-principal was shot in the foot. She managed to limp back to the office (CNN) • Then, he went on through the school, starting a shooting spree which killed 24 people besides the already killed principal and psychologist. When law enforcement arrived, the shooter committed suicide. • Before the incident, Adam had killed his mother in her bed with her own gun. She had been an avid gun collector. What Happened

  4. The Problem People are buying guns that are totally ‘off the hook’. The Second Amendment allows you to bear arms for protection and hunting, but you do not need the equivalent of a M16 military weapon to protect yourself. The Second Amendment was drafted back when we had guns with one shot, like muskets. Things like the Bushmaster version of the AR-15 semiautomatic assault weapon aren’t needed for protection. The only reason you could ever have to buy such a weapon is for a killing like the one committed.

  5. Solving the Problem • First, we should ban assault weapons, like the AR-15. Also, we should make clips five rounds or shorter. We should also only allow a person or family to own one gun. Adam Lanza brought three to Sandy Hook. • Also, we should improve the security by having two guards on campus. Make sure none of them has any criminal background or mental disorder. • We should, finally, make a new security system that relies on sound, sight, and facial expression. If a suspicious-looking man with a hard, set face walks up with a concealed weapon comes up, the machine should be able to detect facial expression. If it hears suspicious clunks of a gun, it should detect that. If it sees a gun not fully concealed, it should sound an alarm. • Schools should be built within a three-mile radius of a police station, a hospital, and a fire station.
