  1. Employment Laws Directions: Answer the following questions, recording your answers on a sheet of paper. You can use pg. 92-94 for assistance.

  2. 1. List (a) an administrative law (act) that each enforces, and (b) two major provisions for the Social Security Administration and the Department of Labor: 2. Explain how the Social Security process works with respect to making deductions from a paycheck, having a Social Security number, and knowing how benefits are paid. 3. Who is eligible to receive unemployment compensation benefits? Who pays the premiums for unemployment insurance? 4. List at least two provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act that do or will affect you as an employee. 5. What is the purpose of workers’ compensation? Who pays the premiums for it?

  4. 2) SS contributions are withheld from each employee’s wages and matched by employers. The employer sends the contributions to the US Treasury. The SS withheld is credited to each person’s account, which is represented by the SS number. Each person has his or her own number. Benefits, from disability to retirement, are paid according to wages earned and monies withheld from wages.

  5. 3) You are eligible to receive unemployment compensation in you worked the minimum length of time and lost your job through no fault of your own. Generally, employers pay the premiums for this insurance.

  6. 4) The FLSA covers minimum wages, overtime hours, and overtime rate. State labor laws further control specifics such as regular paydays, pay in the event of termination of employment, mailing of checks, maximum hours for minors, itemized states of withholdings, tips not a part of minimum wage, right to appeal, etc.

  7. 5) Workers’ compensation laws protect workers from loss of income due to on the job injury or illness, including benefits for a)medical and hospital, b) loss of income, c) partial and permanent disability, and d) death. The premiums are paid by the employer, usually based on the number of days worked. State laws vary.
