  9. Brief Overview – Rhetorical Analysis • Just what is a rhetorical analysis? • Three major components: • Introduction (audience, purpose, thesis) • Body (rhetorical devices and analysis) • Conclusion (summation; answering so what? question) • Not argumentative! • Ethos • Logos • Pathos

Rhetorical Analysis cont. • Rhetorical devices are used to create these appeals. • The rhetorical analysis will ask you to identify these devices (NOT APPEALS) and explain how and why the author uses them. • This makes knowing audience and purpose extremely important. • BA2: Summary and Paraphrase • BA3: Identifying Rhetorical Choices • BA4: Developing Thesis Statements • BA5: Integrating and Evaluating Quotations • BA6: Analysis of Drafting Process
