  2. Project Retrospective • Outside-in • Twitter priority • Beyond NPOs • Actionable output

  3. Today’s Agenda • Discuss new maps • Philanthropy/CSR • Community evangelism/ambassadors • Actions • Methodology • Closing thoughts

  4. Funding Change

  5. Funding Insights • “Philanthropy” used by foundations, nonprofits • “Giving” used by corporations • “Sustainability” closely tied to CSR • “Sustainability” tied to “Development” • “Development” used by government • “#Socent” tied to Sustainability and CSR • “#Socent” yields “#ImpInv”

  6. Evangelism Insights • TechSoup already dominates community-building conversation • Few self-proclaimed “nonprofit evangelists” or “nonprofit ambassadors” • People act for causes, not organizations • Evangelism persists for movements, not campaigns

  7. Inspiring evangelists

  8. Actions • Scan recommended hashtags from each map regularly • Conferences to watch and RT: • 10/1-10/4 SOCAP12, San Francisco http://socap12.socialcapitalmarkets.net/ #SOCAP12 • 8/1-8/3 Youth Assembly at the UN, NYC http://faf.org/main/youth-assembly-at-the-un/ #YA11UN and #YouthUN

  9. Methodology • Consider a few core terms to search • Use a visual tool like http://cloud.li to discover adjacent tags and a core list of current top tweeters • Use SocialBro “Search All Twitter” or Twitter Search to find top tweeters • Add to NodeXL as vertices and log relationships as edges • Generate NodeXL graph and customize vertex locations • Export vertex list to .txt file and add to SocialBro Sources • Use SocialBro to add all to a list

  15. The problem with snapshot analysis Most tools 3 tools Snapshots only capture those you’re talking with now (strong ties) To spread new ideas, you need your whole address book (strength of weak ties) Network Mapping Project overview Granovetter, M. S. (1973). "The Strength of Weak Ties". The American Journal of Sociology78 (6): 1360–1380.

  23. Insights • Hashtag popularity • #opendata is by far the most popular; #civicdata is 1/3 • #egov > #ogov=#gov20 • Hard to include Asia due to language searchability • Often, individuals have more followers than official program accounts, so important to @mention them directly • @NeelieKroesEU 46K vs. her job @DigitalAgendaEU 7K • @AlecJRoss 376K Innovation Advisor for @HRClinton 42K • Planning to add to this map: • Other US cities (though currently less influential than Jay Nath of SF), especially NYC and BigApps contest • Big Data topics (didn’t tackle this yet in order to keep scope manageable, filter out noise) • Open/Big Data for specific challenges like health/cancer (many hits this week due to new data being released), environment, education, etc. that are important to nonprofits

  24. Actions • All 33 @users have been added to a privateTechSoup Twitter list called “open data” https://twitter.com/#!/TechSoup/open-data • You are already following 15 • Use SocialBro to quickly follow the other 18 • Only 1 in this list is following TechSoup • Your choice whether to make the list public • 15 additional #hashtags of interest are yellow on the map • Upcoming conferences to watch and RT: • 6/27-6/29 Open Data Development Camps (#ODDC) working on #openforchangein Nairobi and Amsterdam http://openforchange.info • 7/10-7/12 #IOGDC hosted by @usdatagovand @worldbankhttp://www.data.gov/communities/conference • 6/21-6/22 (passed but still active) #DA12 Digital Agenda for Europe Assembly, in particular ICT for Social Challenges
