Session Objectives • Outline the benefits of Community Partnerships and Resources Development • Why develop community partnerships? • Explain the benefits of expanding the scope of potential support • Overview steps to forming community partnerships • Participant will have guidelines for accessing existing partnerships and resources • Provide community resource assessment • Provide guidelines for soliciting and contacting • Provide guidelines for developing Agency Agreements • Review Resources and Partnership Summaries

Community Partnerships and Resource Development • What we mean by partnership: • It is developing relationships with individuals and community based organizations who have the ability to offer resources (human, service and financial) to support and help meet the goal of increased high school graduation

  5. Why Develop Community Partnerships and Resources?

  6. Partnerships that link schools to community resources help to: • Increase positive student behaviors • Raise student achievement • Increase high school graduation • Benefit both students and the surrounding community

  7. Four Partnerships Categories • Links from school to community (students’ receiving services at an off school site) • Partners provided services in space provided by the school • Capital partners provided services in space within a school paid for by the partner (such as a health clinic or public-library branch) • Partners providing resources other than services

  8. Benefits linked to school community partnerships include: • Improvements in student achievement • Higher student and staff attendance • Better student attitudes and school climate • Dramatic increases in parental involvement • Decreased violence in schools and neighborhoods • Increased community involvement

  9. Levels of Partnership • Communication – Informal sharing with low risk • Cooperation – Work is driven by individuals. Risk to low to organization and varies for individuals • Coalition – More formal and created to amass influence or resources gain greater impact • Collaboration –Most formal and intense. High level of commitment, long term and goal focused.

Stages of Partnership Development • Creating the Environment for Success • Assessing (group) needs, potential resources and partnership models • Vision, goals and objectives • Developing an action plan for partnership • Developing a management system • Developing and managing resources • Monitoring and evaluation of partnership or resource

Identify Partnership and Resource Needs • Before entering into a partnership or begin looking for resources, the high school graduation coach should develop an assessment matrix that contains: • Student needs • Potential resources to meet student needs (mentoring, tutoring, etc). • Like-minded individuals or organizations with the capability to assist in the development of needed resources

  13. Let Discuss Resources That Help Students Graduate High School • What are they? • How do you find them? • How will they know what you need? • How do you keep them? (the good ones)

  14. The Effective Development of Resources can include: • Proposals for funding • Individual monetary solicitations and fundraisers • Developing human capital such as volunteers and service providers • Developing in-kind services and in-kind donations of goods and materials

  15. Guidelines for Resource-seeking Success • Know the protocol of your school • Ask people to give and volunteer the way they want to volunteer • Keep your promises • Be specific about use of time, donations and services • Communicate often, clearly and honestly

  16. Public Speaking and Persuasion Resource Development Tools • Persuasive public speaking creates visibility and credibility for the initiative • Visibility creates a wider sphere of influence • Credibility creates a stronger ability to influence

The Principles of Persuasion • Know the facts and know your audience • Make a strong opening • Get to the point • Anticipate opposing views and rebut in advance • Obtain a commitment – right then • Thank the target person or group • Follow up and thank them • Keep the target person or group informed • And repeat the message as necessary
