Birth of Rembrandt • Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born in Leiden, Dutch Republic in 1605. • He was the ninth child of Harmen Gerritszoon van Rijn and Neeltgen Willemsdochter van Zuytbrouk. • He attended the Latin School and went to University of Leiden. He later resigned from the university to become an artist.

  3. Beginning His Career • Rembrandt established a good reputation and was receiving requests to draw portraits. • As a result, Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam, the capital city of Dutch Republic (or United Provinces) • Rembrandt got married to Saskia van Uylenburg, cousin of the famous art dealer Hendrick van Uylenburg

  4. Love Issues • After Saskia’s death in 1642, Rembrandt had a maid called Geertje Dricx. • Geertje took care of Rembrandt’s son, Titus. Geertje was also a lover of Rembrandt • But Geertje was mean to Titus and Rembrandt wanted her to leave • Geertje then sued Rembrandt for not keeping his promise to marry her. The court charged Rembrandt a huge amount of money. • Rembrandt later cooperated with Geertje’s family to lock her up at a spinhuis, a house of correction.

  5. Een Nieuw Begin (New Beginnings) • Rembrandt started his new life with his new mistress, Hendrickje Stoffels. • They had a daughter, named Cornelia. • Rembrandt carried out his work by drawing etchings. These etchings were sold in high price. • But Rembrandt still had a huge amounts of debts. So he sold his house and moved to a quiet place outside of Amsterdam.

  6. Rembrandt’s Final Years • At 1663, Hendrickje died of disease. • From that period, Rembrandt stopped working on sketches and etchings and started to work on paintings. • Rembrandt’s son Titus also died in 1668. • Rembrandt van Rijn died lonely in 1669. Only 1 year after Titus’s death.

  7. The Night Watch • The Night Watch (De Nachtwacht in Dutch) was one of Rembrandt’s most famous works • This painting is properly titled ‘The Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch’ but it is commonly known as Night Watch due to its dark background • The painting was vandalized few times. First, a schoolteacher named Wilhelmus de Rijk vandalized it with knife in 1975. In the 1990, a man named sprayed acid on the picture but it was fully restored.

  8. The Storm on the Sea of Galilee • The Storm on the Sea of Galilee (De Storm op het Meer van Galilea in Dutch) was drawn in 1633. • This painting showed Jesus and his followers on a ship facing a storm on the Sea of Galilee. • There are 14 people on board. Rembrandt, Jesus, and the Twelve Disciples. • This painting, however, was stolen. At 1990, thieves disguised as polices entered the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and stole ‘The Storm on the Sea of Galilee’ along with 12 other paintings.
