Motivations • Human-computer interaction taught at 3 levels by multiple staff • Repetition of material between levels and team members - though used in different ways • Gap between theoretical understanding and practical application of certain concepts • (Institutional push towards reusable resources and podcasting) HEA-ICS Conference 2008 Liverpool Hope, 26th-28th August

  9. Aside • Are these reusable learning objects? • Any standalone, reusable piece of electronic learning support material. • Pedagogical unit required to achieve learning outcome? Initial evaluation • Missed window for use in classes last year • Short (10 question) survey to students • 60 students invited from levels 1, 3, and M - 29 responses (48% response rate) • 18 Level 3; 8 Level 1; 3 Level M. • 84% were or had studied HCI, others project students HEA-ICS Conference 2008 Liverpool Hope, 26th-28th August

What the students said • High level of agreement (1 and 2 on scale 1-5) that • Useful • Easy to understand • Hold attention • Appropriate to level • Little variation between videos or across levels • Delivery choice: • 100% viewed videos via browser • 88% downloaded to view on computer • 39% downloaded for mobile device • Slow to download and too long! Unexpected outcomes • Involving students in production one of our best successes • Significant as a reflective learning activity for students - videos reviewed within groups for self-assessment • Better understanding of content - final results in practical work better • Investment in end product • They loved doing it!   18. Perhaps surprisingly… • Mobile access and subscription not a priority • Web streaming still most popular followed by downloads • Makes delivery easier (though not strictly podcasting!) HEA-ICS Conference 2008 Liverpool Hope, 26th-28th August

Reflections on production • Involving students in production win-win • Detailed scripts important - especially in a team (also useful as resource for students later) • Use available tools and resources (for us Apple software and Camtasia) - or freeware • Make use of free assets • Match effort to ephemerality HEA-ICS Conference 2008 Liverpool Hope, 26th-28th August

  21. Future plans • Use with all levels in the 2008-09 academic year • Level 1: Separate module removed. Videos to be used to provide this content to students with activities to scaffold learning. • Level 3: Students have covered this material before. Videos to be used for review and revision along with self assessment materials. • Level M: Material new to students. Videos to be used as part of tutorial exercises.   22. Future plans • More complete evaluation (of resources in use) • More support materials to create a range of “real” RLOs based on these video resources • Add new topics …. maybe! HEA-ICS Conference 2008 Liverpool Hope, 26th-28th August
