  1. Box and Whisker PlotsModule 1, Section 2

  2. Box and Whisker Plots • Step 1: Put data in order from least to greatest • Step 2: Find upper and lower extremes of the data. (Lower extreme- smallest number Upper extreme- largest number) • Step 3: Find the median. • Step 4: Find the lower and upper quartiles. • Step 5: Plot all points. Use values to draw the box and the whiskers.

  3. Box and Whisker Plots • To find the lower quartile, take all the data that is below the median and find its median. Ex. The median is 23 and the numbers below it are 17, 17, 17, 17, 18, 18, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 22. So find the median of those numbers. It is 18 which is your lower quartile.

  4. Box and Whisker Plots • To find the upper quartile, take all the data that is above the median and find its median. • Ex. The median is 23 and the numbers above it are 24, 25, 25, 25, 26, 27, 27, 27, 27, 29, 44, 51. So find the median of those numbers. It is 27 which is your upper quartile.
