  1. Undulator Tuning Status Z. Wolf, S. Anderson, R. Colon, S. Jansson, S.Kaplunenko, Y. Levashov, Ed. Reese, R. Ruland, A. Weidemann

  2. Outline • Undulator quadrupole measurements and fiducialization • Undulator tuning and fiducialization • Problems • Repairs • Extend K Adjustment Range • Schedule • Reference undulator measurements

  3. Undulator Quadrupoles Strength And Harmonics Rotating Coil System Fiducialization Vibrating Wire System

  4. Integrated Gradient (normalized)

  5. Harmonics n = 3, 4, 6, & 10

  6. BBA center shift for +/- 1 amp around +/- 4.3 Amps

  7. Quadrupole Measurements • 17 Undulator quads fiducialized to their magnetic center. • Final magnet June 30th. 25 Undulator Quads measured with the rotating coil. Final Magnet June 26th. Tolerances Integrated gradient: no tolerance, measure transfer function, individual supplies Harmonics: no tolerance, small beam size, looking for big problems BBA center shift: ±3 microns, need to look at outliers, also change energy for BBA So far, all quadrupoles seem acceptable. Closer look at BBA outliers required.

  8. Undulator Tuning And Fiducialization • Overview • The tuning is going well • Almost done with 33 (details to follow) • Mounting feet standardization is progressing • Problem with storage, need to re-fiducialize 15 undulators • Repairs of un-tunable undulators have started • Recent plan to increase K adjustment range • The measurements look good • Stable, low noise, … • Hall probe, short coil, long coil measurements agree • The reference undulator measurements are stable

  9. Undulator Measurement Status Done (6) (in Bldg. 33) (5/14/08) Ready for feet (5) (in MMF) To be re-fiducialized (15) (in Bldg. 750) To be tuned (2) Undulator Measurement Status Update (6/17/08) 32 through rough tuning 31 through fine tuning 2 are repaired 2 are RFI (new shims) To be repaired (8) At Argonne (2)

  10. Re-measure After Storage x-trajectory, y-trajectory, phase errors, all ok But The fiducialization changed by 200 microns in x

  11. Bldg 750 Temperature 20 C ~9 C Temperature ~11 C

  12. Storage Temperature Gap Change Field changes agree with gap changes Gap change during storage 1 micron average gap change CMM Hall probe

  13. Storage Problem Summary Bldg 750 re-measured undulators The undulators in bldg 750 should be re-fiducialized. The trajectories and phases are ok. The average gap changed by about 1 micron. The magnetic axis shifted by about 200 microns in x. 200 microns →∆K/K ≈ 1.8 × 10-4 Tolerance ∆K/K = 1.5 × 10-4 Bldg 33 “data point” in process.

  14. Repairs RequiredBefore repair 130µm Two areas to replace shims Ed Reese

  15. After Repair 50µm Ed Reese

  16. New: Extend K Adjustment Range • Originally, only ±2.5 mm good field region could be achieved • Originally, ±2.5 mm horizontal adjustment range required, • but a larger range was desired • New Bx shims allow ±6 mm horizontal good field region • Now we want to extend undulator horizontal adjustment range • Need to solve beam pipe clearance problems

  17. Interference with vacuum chamber X-trajectory shim Cut material off • X-trajectory shims limit vacuum chamber “in”-motion to 2.5mm • Undulators tuned for ±6 mm • Shims to be modified to allow - 6mm motion and • Undulator tuning to be checked

  18. X trajectories

  19. Interference with vacuum chamber. Continued New Old Fix, new triangles on old strongback

  20. Y trajectories

  21. X field integrals

  22. New RFI Schedule General Plan (my view) 1) While we are waiting to install the undulators, we can re-fiducialize and fix the clearance problems according to this schedule. We start near the end and work backwards. 2) If commissioning is going well, we can install any remaining undulators “as-is”. a) The motion range will be restricted, but at the beginning where it is not as important. b) K may be slightly out of tolerance for the first few undulators. We can correct assuming bldg 750 undulators behave similarly. c) We can swap them and fix them after the machine is running. 3) This is in line with the Lehman committee’s desire to get the machine running without additional delays. # * # Beam line commissioning starts * Undulator commissioning starts

  23. Reference undulator Problem with probe calibration* Probe re-calibrated Ktarget=3.498632 K is tuned to the same value each time. K is adjusted for temperature and X-position. (All errors included in the plot.) R.M.S. = 910-5 * Z. Wolf “Undulator tuning and fiducialization schedule”. FAC Meeting, April 2007

  24. Conclusion • Undulator quadrupole measurements are nearing completion. • Production measurements of 33 undulators is nearly complete. New work has started. • MMF throughput averaged 2 devices/month. • Repairs of un-tunable undulators has started. • Tuning accuracy is within the tolerances. • The K adjustment range will be increased. • Due to interference with the vacuum chamber in off-axis position, X and Y trajectory shims will be modified/replaced on all undulators. • The undulators will be re-measured and re-fiducialized and have their shims replaced. • Undulator Status • 32 undulators went through rough tuning • 31 undulators went through fine tuning • 2 undulators are repaired • 2 undulators RFI (with shims replaced) • 1 undulator back from bldg 33, new temperature excursion test
