Name of Artifact: Children’s Multicultural Book Collection Date: April 02, 2015 Course: Education 255 Brief Description: This presentation includes a series of children’s books that cover important cultural topics and examples of multiculturalism. Rationale: This assignment documents my understanding of Standard 2, Learning Diffrences because by choosing a wide variety of children books with multicultural content it a perfect way to ensure inclusivism within the classroom.

Author: Jennifer Moore-Mallinos Publisher: Barron's Educational Series Date: October 1st 2005 Grade Level: K-2nd Unit Theme: Human behavior, acceptance, diversity Genre: Non fiction Summary: This book provides a visual idea of how all children are unique in their own different way. The author Jennifer Moore-Mallinos gives examples in the book of how skin color, hair color, eye color, and even the different foods children eat, and the languages they speak make them unique. The book also emphasizes that even though every child is different, there are many similarities that they share. Activity: Students will be given a piece of construction paper, each of a different color. On the piece of construction paper each student will be responsible of writing a sentence or word that describes how they are unique. Students will be asked to share their sentences with the rest of the class. After each student has shared their sentence, they will work together as a team to form a rainbow. Multiculturalism: The Colors of the Rainbow is a book that teaches children that no matter what race or ethnicity they are, they have many things in common. This book compares each person to a color of the rainbow because everyone is unique in their own way. This book will teach children to respect and accept all people even if they are different from them. The Colors of the Rainbow

Author: Norah Dooley Publisher: Carolrhoda Books Date: November 1st 1992 Grade Level: K-3RD Theme: Cultural diversity & neighborhood life Genre: Realistic fiction Summary: While looking for her younger brother around her neighborhood, Carrie is invited by each family in the neighborhood to have a taste of what they are cooking. Carrie learns that all her neighbors eat rice dishes from many different cultures. As she arrives home she finds her brother, and also sees her mother cooking a rice dish from Italy. Multiculturalism: Everybody Cooks Rice is a multicultural book because it brings different cultures together and makes children realize that people from other parts of the world share similarities, for example, food. Activity: Students will be asked to share some of the foods they eat at home and will compare them to the ones their classmates eat. Everybody Cooks Rice

Author: Alma Flor Ada Publisher: Atheneum Books for Young Readers Date: September 1st 1995 Grade Level: 2-5th Theme: Friendship & cultural diversity Genre: General Fiction Summary: Maria Isabel is a young girl from Puerto Rico who moved to a new part of the town. Maria Isabel loves her name, but she is renamed by her teacher because there are already two girls with the same name in her class. This makes Maria Isabel feel uncomfortable and affects her school performance. Eventually Maria Isabel finds a way to let her teacher know that she doesn't like to be called “Mary” and all turns out well. Activity: Each student will be asked to write a journal about how they will feel if they had to move to a new school and their teacher decided to rename them because in their new class there is another student with that same name. Multiculturalism: This book shows multiculturalism because various cultures are represented in the book. Maria Isabel’s story encourages acceptance of other’s cultures, traditions, and beliefs. Throughout the book Quinito introduces his family members and neighbors and what they do for a living. Activity: Students will be asked to make picture book about the jobs people in the community do, once each student has created their own picture book they will be asked to share it during community circle. Multiculturalism: Quinito’s Neighborhood is a multicultural book because it shows the importance of community and the interrelationship of community members. Author: Atinuke Publisher: Kane Miller  Date: March 1st 2010 Grade Level: 3nd-rrd Theme: Cultural diversity Genre: Realistic fiction Summary: This book is about a young girl and her family who live in Africa. Her father is Black African and her mother is white Canadian. Anna lives with her parents, twin baby brothers, and grandparents, aunties, uncles, and cousins. In their family cars, cell phones and the internet are a way of life, but so is traditional dress and food, and,, traditional values. Activity: After reading the story students will write a journal about their favorite part of the story. Multiculturalism: This book show a perfect example of multiculturalism because of the mixture of cultures in Anna’s family. Anna Hibiscus

White Socks • Author: Evelyn Coleman • Publisher: Open Road Media • Date: January 1st 1996 • Grade Level: K-4th • Theme: • Genre: • Summary: This book is about an African American girl who lived in the segregation era and wasn’t allowed to drink water from a water fountain that was only for white people. She misinterprets the "whites only" sign by the drinking fountain to mean step up on the platform with your shoes off and white socks only. • Activity: After reading the book students will discuss with the class about a time someone helped them or of a time they heled and stood u for someone. • Multiculturalism: This is a books a good example of multiculturalism because it deals with the issues of racism, civil rights, and standing up for what is right.
