  1. Superior Designs, Inc.Fall 2012 Approved Projects(for prototype delivery May 2012) Instructor: Mike O’Dell

  2. Smart Fitness Trainer • Develop a system for Xbox 360, Wii or similar gaming device that simulates a personal fitness trainer • Uses image analysis/sensors to detect player’s position and movements and provides instructions/commands. • Monitors activity level, heart rate, etc and gives real-time feedback. • Sponsor: (TBD)

  3. SCUBA Safety Monitor • Develop a fully submersible that would monitor diver vital signs and report problems to a monitor on the surface • Integrate with diving gear to provide non-obtrusive use • Include locating device to enable emergency assistance for a diver in trouble • Sponsor: (Local diving instructors/ qualified diver)

  4. Highway Surface Profiler • Develop a van-mounted module that will profile highway pavements, running at highway speeds • Interface with accelerometer, laser, and distance encoder sensors to profile the surface. • Team will design and develop the profile module, the sensor(s) interface, printed circuit board, and will program the embedded PC, (an atom or equivalent processor running on embedded windows) • Sponsor: (Dr. Roger Walker)

  5. Air Guitar Game System • Develop a system using Kinect/cameras that plays air guitar. • System would use vision processing software to capture “moves” and score players at end of session. • Software allows live viewing, playback and detailed scoring review. • Sponsor: (TBD)

  6. Auto Racing Monitor • Develop a device that could plug into the inboard diagnostic computer of a vehicle. • System display certain critical information to the user, such as speed, RPM, and engine temperature. • Deploy in vehicles for use in monitoring critical information while racing. • Sponsor: (Mr. Burgess – classmate’s father)

  7. Bandwidth Sharing Mobile Network • Develop a system that would allow two or more Android-based smartphones to share multiple connections to the Internet and distribute available bandwidth. • Devices will use their available connection to the Internet to retrieve pieces of the file and share them with the device that originated the download. • Sponsor: (Chance Eary, PICo Lab at UTA)

  8. Stores Locater • Develop a system that keeps a database of supplies in a storeroom and enable quick location of specific items based on voice command. • For example, in an organization’s office supply storeroom, someone could say “pencils” and the drawer with the pencils would open, or a light would come on at that drawer. • Sponsor: (Dr. Darin Brezeale)

  9. 3D Environment Mapping System • 3D structured environment mapper (Kinect) The goal of this project would be to create an accurate 3D map of an indoor area using the Kinect device. • The device would be mounted on a rotating tripod and placed at various locations throughout the • This map would be very useful for robot navigation or virtual reality type applications. • Sponsor: (McMurrough/Heraclea Lab)

  10. Distributed System People Tracker • Develop a system of at least three connected computers that would monitor and track, via bearing triangulation, several individuals. • Display each identified individual’s position on a map, presented on the main computer display. • Potential use in elderly care environment. • Sponsor: (TBD/Heraclea Lab)

  11. Child-Parent Pairing System • Design and develop a device that could be used in large child care facilities to easily and securely pair child-parent. • The system would allow parent and child to register in a manner to ensure identification pairing (fingerprint scanner?) • Child would be notified in some way when parent is ready for pick-up • Sponsor: (TBD)
